Wow -- sincere thanks to those of you who've posted since I visited this thread yesterday. I really appreciate your kind comments so much!

Jamie Lynne, I was kind of afraid you might end up with lower-quality photos when you said you were having the PDF printed, because the PDF you have wasn't really intended for printing. I really didn't anticipate that you guys would be trying to print out a 152-page color PDF, so I kept the file low-resolution so it would be clear and sharp for reading on screen but wouldn't take forever to download. The high res file I started with was over 250 MB (versus 14 MB for the low-res version) and I thought it would be a download nightmare for everyone. Maybe I need to make a high-resolution PDF available for those who don't mind downloading such a huge file in order to get the maximum print quality.

I would really like to offer a printed version of the Color Archive, but I'm still struggling with the logistics. To do it the way I would want, in full color with glossy paper, etc., would be a really expensive undertaking at the small print run that would be appropriate for a book like this, and I don't think anyone would want to buy a printed version at the price I would have to put on it. If I can work out a way to do a printed version, I will definitely offer copies at my cost to those who have already bought the digital version. Anybody know a cheap, super high quality printer who specializes in very small runs?

Kim,

I printed it at my own color laser printer (and used up most of my ink cartridges! lol!) and would have liked to have had a high-res version as well. I have my Silver Exchange eBooks available in printed version at lulu.com and the quality is actually quite good, though not offset printing quality. You just upload the high-quality (not print quality - difference is 300 dpi RGB vs 300 dpi CMYK) and customers purchase them directly from lulu.

Perhaps you can make available two versions - for those who have already purchased your pdf, thus without the mark-up, and for those you have not with the mark-up?

Thanks for considering that!

PM me if you want more info on lulu.com . . . or need help setting something up (graphic design is my day job).

Thanks, Hayley. I've been looking at Lulu but I keep bumping up against the fact that they only let you use premium paper in hardcover books, and I want a softcover to keep the price down. I'm checking around looking at other publishers, but I may end up using Lulu and if I do you can bet I'll be PM'ing you for more info. Thanks again!

Kim, the white interior paper in 80# weight for the softcover book is actually very nice. I tested it out on one of my ebooks before signing up.

Lulu requires a separate file for the cover/backcover that's 11x17, I will be happy to lay out yours in InDesign (Adobe layout program) and write a hi-res pdf for you if you decide to go with Lulu.

Hmmm, really? What kind of a finish does the interior paper have? Is it glossy? Suitable for a full color book with lots of photos?

I really appreciate the offer of help with the cover, too. I might just take you up on it.

I have my copy at home - will double check the finish for you this evening. It's not glossy but if memory serves, it's matte coated stock thus the full-color images do print well as long the the images are high resolution at 300 dpi at 100%. I like the spiral-bound so the pages lay flat and can be folded over too. We have sold many printed eBooks and have had great feedback on the quality of the books.

Kim - just checked the ebooks from Lulu. It's in fact matte coated stock and the photographs look good. The cover is glossy coated stock in a heavy weight and does look a little better. All in all, I think we all will be thrilled to have a high-res version of your beautiful beads in a printed book of this quality!

Even if it means paying an additional $35-$40 for it over what you already paid for the PDF? Because pricing it out on Lulu, that's what I'm coming up with as a COST, per copy, before any markup or profit. I'm still not convinced I can't do better somewhere else, but darned if I can find where.

Lulu is really expensive. When I was looking into starting a small press it looked like Lightningprint was the best bet, although a little more complicated on the backend.

For what my colour laser toner costs me, I'd rather pay for a book to be printed. If it's at all possible you could offer it as an option -- there are people who would pay the extra.

I'd be interested to know that, too. Do you have a link for them, Kalera? I googled it but there were so many hits I couldn't be sure which one you meant.

I have bought Ebooks to be printed from a website who uses Blurb.com. Not sure what the specifics are for this (I know he had to verify a certain number of orders to get pricing before it was for sale) but maybe worth looking into.

Blurb is good, I had my own book printed in regular quality paper and it came out good, so I suppose their Premium paper is even better
Here's a link for pricing
http://www.blurb.com/create/book/pri...ndard-portrait

They do Premium paper for soft cover; for 152 pages that would be $45.95

I wonder if the pics we have now would print ok on Lulu or not. Reason I ask is there is a discount code that can be used and today is the last day.

"If you are looking to buy the printed copy of SE6 from Lulu, today is the last day to get 25% off. Use coupon code WINTER. Just ordered my copy"

I just got my Lulu copy today. I ordered before I knew about the resolution issue. The quality of the book is good, but the photos aren't as wonderful as they would be with higher res. A bit fuzzy. Now I'm bummed because I didn't even know about the discount!

On the other hand, I'm thrilled to have the book in "solid" form!-Gail

that is a total bummer. I want it totally for the awesome pics. I'm sorry they weren't good. The discount id listed on the front page. I was told it only lasted today maybe it lasts longer. fingers crossed. Can you maybe send it back and claim it is poor quality?

Just so you know, I suspect I would have been perfectly satisfied with the quality if I had not read that a higher resolution could have been used. That made me scrutinize the photos more than I would have, otherwise. The photos and beads are still wonderful, and you can see everything...It just isn't as sharp as on my ipad.--Gail

Gail and Patty, I'm sorry about the print resolution issues but please understand that this was designed and sold as an e-book and it was not intended to be printed out. I'm working on a solution to make the high-res file and possibly a printed version available to everyone who wants them, but I just need some time to figure out the logistics.

Kim, I do understand what you are saying. I'm sorry if I sounded critical. It was not my intent at all! I LOVE the archive totally. I'm just very interested in how to get it into book form at a good price - which I don't mind paying for myself. The reason that I want it in book form is because I love it SO much! Again, I'm sorry if I sounded critical. I have no criticism of the compilation whatsoever. I have printed a few pages on my computer and they turned out great!
Please forgive the way it sounded. that is not where I was coming from at all. I am thrilled that you have shared with us. Many thanks.

I purchased the water section of the archive. The information given for the bead colors was nice information. I have to admit I was a little shocked at the quality of the photos. Kim has always taken excellent photos of her work, but many of the photos in the Water section of the archive were blurry and seemed to be out of focus. I looked at them both on my Mac and my Ipad and the quality isn't good. I was hoping to see crystal clear photos along with the nice technical information she included.

Patty -- no worries at all, sweetie. I didn't find anything you said critical, I just feel bad about not anticipating the demand for this in high-res and printed formats and want people to understand that this version was not meant to be printed out so that they won't be disappointed with the results. And also that I'm working on printable/printed versions.

Vena, I'm stunned to hear that. I haven't had any complaints at all about the sharpness of the photos when viewed onscreen -- in fact, just the opposite -- so I'm stumped on this one. Is it possible that you have the PDF zoomed to a size which would cause it to show up pixelated? Have you tried viewing it at actual size in your PDF viewer? If we can't figure out what the issue is, I'll be glad to send you a refund, but if the photos are as blurry and out of focus as you say they are, it would stand to reason that others would notice that too, so I'm puzzled about why nobody else is complaining. The photos look fine on my monitor.

Do the photos look blurry and out of focus to anyone else when viewing the PDF onscreen?

Kim, there are five photos in the archive I received that I perceive to be out of focus. The other ones are beautiful just like always. When I say out of focus I don't want to give the impression they are unusable, they're just not your usual crystal clear, crisp photos. No, they are not pixelated. They are just a little blurry when compared to the other photos in the archive. I don't want a refund. The information given was good information and the bead porn was delicious. In fact, I probably wouldn't have said anything about it at all if the problem with the photos and their resolution wasn't mentioned above. Your archive is certainly well thought out and with high resolution photos it would be a beautiful book to have printed.

I'm putting all of my PDF tutorials on my new color E-Book - which to me is the best of both worlds. My studio doesn't have too much left over space, so having a stack of books/papers is pretty much out. Since my e-book is a touch screen, I just have to swipe my finger to go to the next page.
