Default How "deep" should a work station be?

I am a complete beginner - about 4 months now - but absolutely love what I am doing - and want to set things up right - still so many questions - you are all so generous with your advise - so very much appreciated!

I am trying to set up a place to work safely - with proper ventilation etc. My question for the moment is this: How "deep" should a work station be?" I am trying to decide between a bobcat, lynx, mini cc or betta with an oxy con and ng( or maybe stick to propane)for my first upgrade from a HH. - and am wondering if there is a difference between torches etc.with regards to the safe distance from a wall.

I would really like to be able to convert an old computer desk into an enclosed hood - lining it with sheet metal / and or/ fire retardant material- and have a sheet metal worker build a hood vent - but the current depth of the desk is only 22 inches. How much bigger should it be so that I don't burn the house down?

Maybe I should be posting on the safety forum - what do you think?

I like a 30-inch workstation... dunno if it's helpful, but I use a Barracuda and it's no problem with the back wall.

I use my betta on a 30" worktable as well. No problems with the wall
