Ventilation Done, What Do You Think?
We finished the ventilation system on the hood this weekend. Here's what I have - a 16.25 gal. galvanized oval washtub suspended by hooks in the ceiling and a CFM 350 fan installed in it. One 90 degree turn going straight out the window. The fan had a 10" connector on it but we couldn't find 10" ducting so we downsized it to an 8". Then put a 6" piece on the part that goes out the window. There is only one problem: when we put the part on the outside duct that turns down to the ground the air actually blows back IN to the fan. Weird! So with it off, it's great. With it on, it sucks. Any suggestions? Thank you! Oh, and we didn't put the white plastic decorative cap on the fan after we installed it into the tub. It didn't fit anyway.

How about like this...
This fan type is a poor type for what you are trying to do...This is typical blade type fan for moving fresh air through a space like bathroom (to remove odors and reduce moisture in room)...
Calculations says hood opening length x width calculates out that you need at lest 375 to 400 cfm.... My recommendation would be to get about a 400 cfm "squirrel cage" blower.....
IT goes like this 16.5x32.5=536.25 square inches. Divide that by 144 (one square foot) you get 3.75 square foot opening. Simple ventilation rule is a minimum of 100 cfm per square foot of opening. So your 3.75 square foot opening requires a fan of 375 CFM... Probably a 400 cfm fan would be even better considering losses in fan efficiency and duct work...

Hi Dale,
Sadly, we can't afford to pull this one out right now. But thank you very much for the advice, I will remember it in the future. I appreciate it!
