Default Sugar beads

You know those, usually, round beads that you roll in clear frit and they look like they are sugar coated? Well any pointers on making them? Or is it just PPP? I tried my hand at it last torching session and, well, they are just sad. I'm having trouble getting the frit on the beads near the mandrel. I'm also having problems keeping the frit from melting in too much. I think the fine line between melting the frit in enough but not too much is PPP.

Any suggestions that may help?

Sorry I can't help, but if it makes you feel any better, I have the exact same trouble.

I use my 'coke spoon.' It's actually a demitasse spoon (but that's what DH calls it because of my frit addcition)...the size that people collect as souvenirs. For small to medium-large beads, the bowl just seems to have the right curvature for rolling and sticking frit close to the mandrel.

what is PPP?

and i found childrens stainless steel cooking sets to hold various frits in. if you hold the little pan up to the flame and shake, just like cooking, it warms up the frit, less popping.

Well, I don't make those, but I think I can help because I learned (with PPP, of course!) to get frit to the mandrel. Heck, I make too many frit beads!

Scoop up (with a spoon or butter knife) your frit into a steep pile, or as steep as you can get it. Roll the bead through the center of the pile and sort of bury it to the mandrel level as you roll. Be careful that your bead is not too hot or it's going to be too soft and it will become out of shape real quick.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Yeah I need to PPP. I tend to either get the bead too hot and it distorts or not hot enough and the frit won't stick.

I use a spice jar for ones like that. They're filled about 1/4 - 1/3 full, and then when I want to use it I tip it sideways a bit and dunk the bead in. becasue it's in the jar, I can shake it a bit and it gets around the tough bits pretty well. Heat of the bead is pretty important though, it needs to be cool enough not to deform, but hot enough for the glass to stick - that part is just ppp - jen
