Default Basic Encased Bead (Written & Video)

Hello everyone

Lots of you seemed to like my Basic Thick Encasing Tutorial and a couple of people asked me if I could do one on 'regular' encasing.

Your wish is my command .....

This tutorial shows you how I make beads like this one :

The written tutorial for it can be found on my blog :
http://laurasparling.blogspot.com/20...ased-bead.html

And there is a video version of it on YouTube :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFuC6OcB81E

I hope you find the tutorial helpful.

All the best

Laura, thank you for the great camera shot of how you apply the clear! I watched that particular part about ten times. I can't wait to practice this tomorrow!

Thanks Debbie! Ha - my Hampshire accent. I can't stand hearing my own voice. The way I say 'right' and 'turning'. Comes out 'roight' and 'tuurnin'. *Cringe!*

This video has been an enormous help to me in finally doing some decent encasing!

After watching and rewatching the part beginning at 2:45 where Laura sticks the base of the gather on the bead and spins the mandrel, I felt ready to practice. I decided not to conquer the world. I didn't worry about scummy clear or anything else--I just wanted to get an even wrap.

I used a base of transparent cobalt since it's nice and stiff. Wow, my first attempts were successes! The clear wasn't even scummy! I'm using these beads on a beadable pen to sell.

One of my first lampworking instructors showed this technique, only we didn't have the luxury of being able to rewind to the moment of applying the gather, seeing how the gather droops in front of the bead, and spinning to get a nice wrap.

Watch the video several times if you've suffered with encasing.

Thanks, Laura!

I think your tutorial has really inspired me to try and do this....finally! After 7 years of making beads and avoiding encasing for one reason or another!

This is a great video. I never encase like this but it looks really fun and way faster too! When you said to melt your clear so the blob is about 3x the size of the bead, you answered a question I've always had.

Thanks for doing the video.

Really great video! I was doing everything right except where I was "folding" the glass into the ends you "push" it into the ends. Can't wait to try your technique!

Laura, the video is excellent! This is the same method I use to encase small beads and I think it gives the most flawless results. It's definitely worth the time it takes to learn it. Thanks so much for sharing your video!

BTW, love your website. The striped beads you have in your gallery are to die for.
