My new tank of propane is making weird rattling noises
I picked up a "new" tank of propane today and when I took it out of the car and set it down, it made weird rattling/jingling noises. This went on for several minutes before it finally quieted down. I put it outside far from the torch and kiln (I had a second tank going).
Later I moved it back into the studio and the rattling noises started up again and went on and on, like a baby toy with a battery making crazy noises.
I'm thinking I should take it back and swap it. I'm afraid to use it. Is this a normal thing or should I be worried? It sounds like the tank is possessed.

It is most likely the float inside the tank. Hear the same sound on my OPD value tanks.

There's a float? Who knew. Is it OK to use it then?
It's an older-looking tank with some rust and dings.

Is the valve handle round shaped with little dimples? If it is then that is an old style tank and is now illegal. Look on the tank shroud and check the test/cert dates also. I've never had one rattle so that indicates to me that something is not right. It's probably safe to use but I would take it back and exchange it just to be sure.

I took it back and swapped it for another one. I didn't like driving in the car with it. I have no idea how I didn't notice the rattling until I got home yesterday. All's well now.

Mine always makes this noise on the drive home from a refill. Then it stops. I think it has to do with temperature?

I have a Regalia that I am very happy with. Next studio will have natural gas but Lowes is very convenient for swapping out tanks and I keep a backup tank so I never run out.

I almost never "swap" propane tanks. I get mine filled at a local hardware store. I can get two tanks filled for the price of a swap.
