Hi all, I'm a Newbie lampworking working on a Hot Head torch. I got some Devardi glass (the price is right!) and, like many here, had rod exploding (the semi-opaque pink was the most prone to this) problems.
I got better results when using Propane instead of Mapp/Pro to work the glass. I hope to continue this way as I love the semi-opaques which are the most explosive.

Just wanted to add another little lesson learned. I have a firebrick kiln from Arrow Springs, and it sits just to my right, so this is easy for me to do. Your mileage may vary, but maybe you can make it work too.
When I use a Devardi rod, I let the end cool just enough to not be molten anymore, then lay it on top of the kiln. It's warm enough that the rods cool slower, and I don't get shocky tips which will blow up on me the next time. When the kiln is cooled down, I 'harvest' them from the top and put them where I want them for next time. Without doing this, I was getting deep cracks as the rods cooled, which would basically pop off with the next use, as I was warming them to molten--no matter how slow I reheated the ends, I was getting shrapnel.

Oh, one more thing which DesertDreamer reminded me of. I don't have a kiln, but I put the used but still hot rods into a mug full of hot annealing bubbles (I have the mug sitting on a cup warmer.) That also helps.

I have a hotplate with a piece of stainless steel on it to preheat skocky rods and such.

When I remember, I put the rods I want to use IN the kiln, and pull them out as I need them. Then, like Karen, i put them on top of the kiln when I am done.

HAPPY Details with Devardi
The fine detail work that is possible with this glass is fabulous. WORTH the struggle with shockiness. See the Bear noses for example.
I struggled with the the pink the most, but as soon as I got the little Potpourri Crock Pot and preheated the rods things went much better!
I pulled thick stringers to work with and had NO shockiness by the way.
So glad to have a glass for a great price and such sturdiness!

Devardi Brown
Yes, it was in the box of Shorts I just got. I wanted to try a lot of colors before buying so I ordered 4lb.
It's almost a Goldstone brown in color. I hope they put it up with this next batch they get in.

That brown could be the D158- Opaque Chestnut Red Brown
I can take a picture in daylight tomorrow if you like and compare it to the site color.

Yes, Folly...please do let us know what it is! I happen to love brown and am always looking for one that doesn't turn reddish or yellowish! That looks like a very nice warm brown indeed! Your work is very cute, too! I work small also...
I'm gonna search back a bit, but would love to see any beads made with that new Violet color on the site...it looks luscious!
I see that Devardi will be out-of-town from August 16th to Sept. 1 - but I'm hoping to place an order after they return.

Ok got to play some tonight. The rod that was cracked all the way down the rod was very shocky and lost alot of the rod. I did find that the thicker rods were not as shocky as the thin rods. Will play more this weekend. I have just had time to make a few beads. I guess I will make frit out of the one rod as I really like the color (puple/pink). I did get a rod of the brown and played with it. So far I like the color and hope it stays the rich color I got when I melted it.

Black Silvering Question
Has anyone used the Black that turns Silver?
Can I use it successfully on a Hothead Torch? 
Any advice would be appreciated!

Daniel said the older metallic black only got a minimum of silver. The new metallic black would be a bit more silver saturated, so it could work.

I found a cheap 1.5 quart slow cooker, filled it with annealing bubbles (Heritage Glass), stuck in the Devardi rods and turned it on high.
Result: Only one exploding rod and much quicker melting.

Annealing
Has anyone tried annealing the rods to take out the shockiness? I know I have bought beads made in India that are extremely thermal shocky, I always assumed that they had not been annealed. I just bought some of the Devardi, I havent gotten it yet though. What colors are really shocky and I'll try annealing the rods, and let you know if it helped...if no one has tried that.

Annealing sounds like a good idea; my kiln is pretty small though so I'd have to cut the rods up to do this.
Regarding the annealing bubbles, there's WAY LESS DUST, and they work awesomely, IMHO!!!

Hi Echo,
I did anneal the shorts I received. It helped but the true help is in preheating before using the rods, and then S-L-O-W-L-Y introducing the rods to the flame, and working at the outer end of the flame.
You can relax with this glass, it takes time and holds it's shape.
If you read back a few pages you will see people talking about preheating in their kiln or a small crockpot.
