I'm not terribly worried about getting the glass quickly, I have plenty to play with at the moment lol. I was more concerned that perhaps she just didn't get it. If I don't hear from her in a couple of days, I will try again, no big deal.

Sonja, I sent my order in by e-mail too and haven't heard anything either ? I'm just getting back to torching after taking most of the winter off, and I'm in the same boat as you. I still have glass but I will be hitting the torch hard here shortly to get ready for summer shows and I have to stock several shops that are carrying my work. I struck me as really odd too. Usually I get my invoice fairly quickly too !!!!

Natasha just contacted me and I emailed her my order. Some of the emails aren't going through (may just email overload lol). I know she is checking this thread, but I would go ahead and email her again just in case. I sent my order to info@devardiglass.com the second time. The first time I used the contact form on the site.

first experience with devardi
well... so far i must say i like it!! I do have some shock issues - but hey - i have sat behind a torch like 6 times now sooooo not like a have a great grasp of heat control.
I do have some questions for you more experienced glass people. what in the world do i do with the sometimes "slab-o-glass" i get? lol I am not complaining!!! the glass is great quality no matter the size of the rod. I am just so freakin new that the 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick rods have me a bit befuzzled. I have pulled some stinger from the thicker rods, but lets face it. Stringer expert i am not and again because of my lack of experience most turn out very skinny. the thought of trying to lay a base bead with stinger that thin makes me nervous... i have enough trouble. lol anyway.
I said all that to say this.... love the glass!!! what is the best way to pull down a huge rod like that?
and on a side note- if you break you bead release making something, do you try to continue? or do you give up and throw it in the water pot? I personally try to finish if i can. threw some color drags through an unfinished star bead when my release broke just 5 min ago. eh... we will see.....
Thanks everyone!!! LOVE DEVARDI!!

First, here are two links to free Tutorials that I worked up for people on the Devardi Site. The first one is about making and pulling encased Goldstone Stringer, but it shows you how to pinch down the thick rods before you pull your stringer. The second one is all about pulling stringer. I hope they help:
http://www.devardiglass.com/encasedg...nestringer.htm
http://www.devardiglass.com/pullingstringers.htm
On the broken Bead Release, you should have a good sized can or pot of water that you put your hot mandrels in when you have a bad wrap or broken bead release. In the worse case the glass could become loose enough to slide back toward your hand as you try to save the bead... ask me how I know! Otherwise, it will have a distorted hole where the bead release flared, or may get chips of bead release in it.
There are also tutorials on making a bead with and without a beadroller on the Devardi site, under 'Tutorial' across the top bar on the page. Ask away if you have more questions, there are so many people on this Thread that are helpful.

Poor Sweetie... use ice. My worst was when the bead release broke on a large encased floral that I was just about to finish. I tried to finish and it broke completely loose of the release AS I was putting it in the kiln - and slide DOWN the mandrel into my finger! Instant SEARED flesh!
Hey, does anyone else want to share their worst burn story? Or is that to gory?

Welcome to the addiction Bluemantid!
Generally speaking, if the bead release breaks, it goes in the water jar, 99.9% of the time its not worth the effort to try and save it.
My worst burn to date is when I broke my most important rule, which is don't torch when I am tired. This limits my torching time since I work a day job lol but really, its much safer for me. I put the first finger of my left hand directly in the flame between my hand and the knuckle. Third degree burn easy, it didn't blister it just charred. Took a couple of months to heal, and although you cant really see the scar unless you really look, it turns red when my hands get cold or from the heat of the torch when I am working. Also, not all of the fat under the skin has come back so there is a slight dent in my finger lol.
I have burns all over my hands and arms though and a couple on my legs from tiny pieces of flying glass. I use a leather vest now to cover my lap, but there isn't much I can to about my hands. Fortunately I am not terribly vain lol.

You poor darling! Yikes!
I watched a video early on that said to ALWAYS dab your rods or stringer into the heat in the direction of the flame as you warm or check them. Then any flying chips go forward not as likely back or sideways. I can't tell you how many times I have escaped a burn that way as a chip shot off forward!

Okay so I'm hoping someone will read my post and tell me what I am doing wrong with the opaque pink. I know it has to be warmed first before using and I did. It came out grey. What did I do wrong?

CSimi115: Sounds like you might have put it in a reducing flame? Pinks don't like that!
Bluemantid: YIKES! Yes, you are lucky! LOL I always keep a jar of Pitty Pat's Burn Gel on my torch table and it's saved me a couple of times. Just the other night I "seared" my finger on a hot rod I had just put down—even left some skin behind on the rod (eww!). Kept putting on the burn gel for a few hours until the sting went away and the next morning, I could barely see the mark and there was no blister. *whew!*

OMG! i am so new to flamework i cant believe i have something to contribute!!! i agree with LoriB, I was working some lovely pale pinky lavender color recently and had the same thing happen. Some of it turned kinda metalic - other parts..ugh.. UGLY!! i work on a HH and I guess it just didnt like the flame chemistry.
Keep trying !!! if you are on a dual torch just make it a bit on the oxidizing side and see what happens! Good luck and let us know how it goes! If you are on a HH ... well.... i have no advice... lol I am not gonna work my pinks etc till I get my Big Girl Torch set up.

Clear Glass Goldfish
I played with clear last night. I really need to clean it well before working it. I read all about the hot pickle cleaning method, have any of you tried it?
I'll try again with clean rods and stingers!

Ok, here's mine..... Yesterday, after having a horrendous day at the office, I decided to melt some glass to relax. In my hurry to get going, I failed to let my rods get warm enough and an SOP white broke about 2 inches from the end. I put down the rod in an attempt to save the bead, (which failed, I might add), went to pick it back up and... yup, you guessed it, picked up the hot end !!!! DUH!!! Nice marks on my palm and little finger. I have an aloe plant in the garden that works nicely until I can get my MD to supply me with Silvadene in a pump bottle. LOL

Oh that's so painful... I have picked up a hot rod too! Tell us how the Silvadene does.

The Silvadene is great! I highly recommend asking your doc for a RX next time you see him!

lol this is why I made a rule that I never, ever, torch when I am tired.
I can't even tell you how many times I have picked up the rod on the wrong end, but not so much now that I just stick the hot end back in the warmer. But I can't seem to break myself of trying to catch the rod if I drop it. Cause that's going to help lol.
My glass shipped on Monday so should hopefully be here very soon. I am eager to try a couple of the new colors, especially the apple green.
I haven't tried pickling the rods although I should do something lol.

Another beauty Kristina. I'm glad I stopped here. I love how you made this one transparent. You are just blowing your fish out of the water (no pun intended )
A word about pulling thick rods down. I wish Devardi would just make them skinnier

Kristina, that fish is awesome, and living in Florida, it would look rather lovely on top of my piano. !!!! LOL You are truly gifted.
Ok, I have to ask, what's the hot pickle cleaning method? I have a bunch of glass I have to clean before my new stuff gets here. My husband suggested just putting it all in the dishwasher, which in theory sounds like it would work. Ummmmm, would it???

Thank you so much Cynthia and Nanner! And Nanner, here is a link on a recent Thread about pickling clear glass to clean it.
I wanted to post these contrasting pics of fish made with cleaned clear versus wiped-off clear. I shot them against the same color to show the difference.
The one on the left was just a wiped off rod. For the one on the right, I washed the clear rods with Dish Soap and then rinsed and sprayed them with Glass Plus window cleaner and dried them on a paper towel. That sure made a difference! Pickling is used by lampworkers who want crystal clear colors and it is more work. At a minimum it's 'clear' we need to wash our glass!
Here's the link to the Thread on Picking and recipes and methods to do it:

I have tried the pickling and think it is great. I have also put it in my dishwasher. That was great and no work!
Kristina-your fish are great!
I tried the boro last night. Will see what the kiln fairy left me when I get home from work.
