Default New Torch

I have been saving for a new torch. I have a rather silly question. I was thinking of getting a Cricket. My husband thinks I should get the Bobcat. Has anyone gotten a Cricket and then wished they had gotten a Bobcat? I think he's afraid I'll outgrow the Cricket and wants to forestall an additional upgrade.

what is your oxy supply? I think a lot depends on that.

DOG is my co-pilot
Cricket w/two 5 lpm oxycons - and sometimes a Minor.

I just got a cricket a couple of weeks ago and I love it. But like squid says it depends on your oxy and also I think on what type of beads you make (as in how big, do you do lots of big sculptural work etc.) and what kind of glass you use (soft glass, boro?)

I have heard some Bobcat owners prefer their Cricket over the Bobcat.

If you're on a 5 LPM machine, you will be able to get a more oxidized flame with the Cricket. The Bobcat will get a hotter flame. You can still get an oxidized flame with the Bobcat on 5 LPM, but it just isn't as driving as that of the Cricket.

If you have more oxygen, then the Bobcat catches up in terms of being able to get a driving, oxidized flame. It is even hotter on more oxygen, too, and has a bigger top end.

You can always get a torch now and sell it later or keep it for a spare or for torching with a friend. So, if flame chemistry is really more important than heat, and you're limited in your oxygen supply, you might want to go with the Cricket. Otherwise, the Bobcat would be a better choice, IMHO.

Well, I'm going to want to get an oxycon to go with my torch. Someone told me I'd want an 8 LPM concentrator for the Bobcat. Until I can get an oxycon I'll be working on tanked oxygen. Right now I'm making small beads, however, with more fire power, I suspect it won't be long until I start experimenting with more things...I tend to push the envelope. Right now I'm looking to work faster, so I can get my orders out more quickly. But I'm anxious to try experimenting with bigger and sculptural. So far, it's just been goddesses and hearts.

I would go with a Bobcat, then. When you're ready for a concentrator, either start out with a 5 LPM and then get another one later, or start out with a 10 LPM. I wouldn't mess with an 8 LPM unless you just wanted to for some reason. The extra 2 LPMs that a 10 LPM machine would have over an 8 LPM machine is worth it.

I think the person that told me 8 meant that I didn't want to try anything smaller than that. My biggest frustration with my hothead--other than the slowness is the inability to actually control the flame and make it pinpoint to spot heat some of the designs I try to make. Will I have that control with a Bobcat?

Yes, you will a pinpoint flame available and you can adjust your flame chemistry for reduction flames and oxidized flames, as well as good neutral flames.

I have a Bobcat and a Cricket, both on 5lpm concentrators. I like them both. The Cricket gets a bigger flame, and is a bit hotter. But I like my Bobcat better for some reason. Not exactly sure why, and it may just be because it was my first torch after my hot head, so I learned on it first.

[I only do soft glass.]
