Default 2 questions: size and oxy

I have just started boro after 6 years of soft glass. I have 2 questions. First what is the biggest piece anyone has made with a minor and tanked oxy? Also, I hear a lot about how big/many oxy cons people work with. How do the oxy cons compare with the tanked oxy?

Thanks

Default Boro with Oxy Conc. EX-15

Hello, I currently use an EX-15 and a wale firebird. I can do large 1 3/4" by 3/4" thick (pandora sized ) beads of Boro, and 1" pendants. Last winter I used tanked oxygen but I switch to the concentrator during the warm months. I think I got much nicer colors with the tanked oxygen. I'm having trouble getting the colors I want. I've been fooling around with my annealing schedules, and that doesn't seem to help. Then again, I could be just inexperienced. I'm almost deperate enough to fill a tank up and see what the difference is. I hope this helps. It is slow going with my setup. Hope this helps.

Largest marble i made on a minor is about 1 1/2 inches/38.1mill in diameter took over an hour, was really basic design.

Here something I made on a minor
http://williamsglassproducts.files.w...2/imgp0055.jpg
It stands about 8 inches/203.2 mill tall. the petals are about 2 inches/50.8mill long at the widest point about 1 inch/25.4 mill wide. the green part I made by striping a 10 mill rod with green and cover it with clear. I Made it in parts put the parts in the annealer till I was ready to assemble it all together. Took overt 3 hours to make.

You can make fairly large things on a minor as long as your dont need to heat large areas of glass up.

Once you get into over 1/2 inch/12.7 mill in diameter its start to bog down.

I have the same set up! I have made 2" marbles. I regularly melt 19mm boro rods to make pendants and marbles.

I love that flower, glasspyro. I only have a few rods and made 2 beads and 3 hearts, but the color is there with no work from me. I used amber purple, queen bee, and two others that I don't know the name offhand. It's amazing how peaceful it is compared to soft glass when things don't go to much in seconds

could you explain? I guess I was wondering about color development and the amount of heat I could get out of both with my minor.

Concentrators have a couple major drawbacks...

First, you are limited as to how much volume they can put out. With tanks, you can put out as much volume as you would ever want (granted, the quantity is limited).

Second, the purity of the oxygen coming out of a concentrator is not as high as tanked oxygen. So, if you have a torch set up to produce a neutral flame on tanks, that same flame will be reducing on a concentrator.

That's not to say you can't get success out of a concentrator. Many people do it all the time. Personally I would never use a concentrator for borosilicate though. Too many limiting factors (and my torch won't run on concentrators).

Thanks,
You just gave me good reason not to spend a ton of money right now. I get a refill for $10 and am fine lugging tanks

If your fills are only $10, I'd stick with tanks. Fills here are about $70 after all of the fees. I just couldn't afford the oxy (and hated having to "budget" torch time). That's why I switched to a concentrator.

What size oxy tank do you have? A 80 cost me $17.94 and the 280 cost just under $40. I think those are the correct sizes and I think its in cubic feet.

Mine were the 280 cu ft. The price is outrageous here!

Mines an 80. I couldn't lug the larger one up and down the basement stairs myself. My gas guy gives me a good deal.

Mine is $17 per fill. I'd been considering a concentrator but I'm so glad this thread was started because I think I'll just stick with Oxy, at least for awhile. Plus there's a space issue for me, I don't really have room for a boxy concentrator.

Man. Even more reason for me to move away from this redneck town. Cheapest fills here are $34.

I get a 124 CuFt tank filled (swapped) for about $18. Currently it lasts me a month, or a little less than 20 hours.
