Default Help with GIMP!

I am a real gimp for GIMP. I've read the online manual, fiddling around for the past two point five hours, but I have zero experience with photo editing whatsoever and I am stumped. Does anybody have any experience with Gimp and help me sharpen, lighten, and what the hoobly are layers supposed to do for you anyways?

Here's what I'm starting with:

Thank you thank you!!

If it is, my steps:

1. Open image
2. Go to Colors, levels, choose the far righ dropper (white level)
3. Click on area of photo known to be white.*
4. Go to Filters, Enhance, Unsharp Mask
5. Change radius to .1, amount to .5 (+ or -) and threshhold to 0.

*Do the same with black and grey droppers for further adjustment. I only used white.

YW. GIMP works just like Photoshop, for the most part.

I use layers when I want to square up a picture up for Etsy. If you use any text, you will be making a separate layer, so you need to merge your layers before saving your picture for the last time.

A lot of times the auto adjust for levels works pretty well also. You can always revert it back before saving it if you don't like the results.

Shawnette.. as usual.. you totally ROCK.

I've been struggling w/GIMP for some time now (not constantly, man wish I had the time!) ..but trying to learn to create banners as well as all sorts of other stuff with limited success.
You have a way of quitessentializing (hey, did I just invent a new word?) the crazed fragments I can (scarcely) manage to hold in my head into neat orderly concise words. VERY helpful!

Bless you and yours, WOMAN!

Thank you.
