Default flame work terminology...

what is reactive?
what is shocky?
thereare so many words I do not know how the reference is being used.
is there a source that explains it all???

I want to understand but I find myself guessing what some things mean.
I think I would rather look at an explaination that describes what these words mean.

any ideas/help would be very appreciated.

Ritch, there is a great book called More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About Glass Beadmaking by James Kervin and also a 3 volume set of books called Contemporary Lampworking: A Practical Guide to Shaping Glass in the Flame by Bandhu Dunham that are probably two of your best sources for lamp working/flameworking terminology, science and technique.

Here is a link to the Glossary of Glass Terms from the Corning Museum of Glass: http://www.cmog.org/research/glass-dictionary/a

Their online library is an excellent source for everything glassy.

I made a brief dictionary of some of the abbreviations often seen in the forum. They may be helpful as well:

Commonly used glass abbreviations

BHB = Big Hole Bead
Boro = Borosilicate Glass

CG = Copper Green aka Effetre 219
CIM = Creation Is Messy AKA Messy (Glass company)
COE = Coefficient of Expansion (33 for borosilicate, 90, 96, 104, 120 for soft glass)

DH = In regards to glass, Double Helix (glass company). In regards to family, Dear Husband

EDP = Evil Devitrifying Purple aka Effetre 254

GA = Glass Alchemy (Glass company)

HH = HotHead torch

IB = Intense Black (Effetre 066)
ISO = In Search Of, Is Seeking Out

MOP = Mother of Pearl (translucent glass, a mother of pearl look to it)

NS = North Star (Glass company)

OY = Opal Yellow (Effetre 266)

RCG = Red Copper Green (Effetre 229)
RO = Rubino Oro (Effetre 456)

SIS = Silvered Ivory Stringer
SRA = Self Representing Artist
SC = Striking Color
SOB = Seriously Overworked Bead

WTB = Want To Buy
WTS = Want To Sell
WTT = Want To Trade

HTH (Hope The Helps),
Alli

flame chemistry (too much oxygen, too much propane) affects the color of the glass. Most of the time this term is applied to glass that has silver in it, very cool effects are possible. Typical brands are Double Helix and TAG.

what is shocky?
glass tends to shatter and small pieces fly off the end when introduced into the flame
