HELP, Please ???Cricket torch set up for Dummies
Hi All..
Upgrading from a hothead 1.5 yrs...Just ordered my cricket, NOW to order everything else... I need to know what else to order, hoses, regulators, flashback arrestors, (want to place the f/a at the torch versus the tank and oxycon)oh and my concentrator... Darn, isn't there a Cricket torch set up for Dummies Book that I have seen??? Anyone willing to post/share a pic of their set-up would be greatly appreciated...What goes where???
I am totally overwhelmed with all the info in the Torch/Studio setup area.
Ventilation is a whole OTHER subject... will cross that bridge once I gather all my initial supplies... I am just SOOO excited to step-up to another torch, HOWEVER safety comes first...
Thanks in advance for any tips, suggestions ... Of course GTT is there to help me along..great customer service...

ok
You will need
1- Propane regulator Harbour freight has these for very reasonable pricing.
1 set of Hoses - you can use clear tubing for oxy if its from a concentrator to the torch For propane you will want a red fuel hose harbor freight has those to. You can even use a regular green oxy hose for the concentrator too but you will need to cut the couplers off one end to attach to the torch this goes for the propane hoses to. These are usually over with welding supplies on a bottom shelf.
2 hose clamps smallish for the torch end of the hoses to make sure they are secure.
On a surface mix torch flashback arrestors are really not necessary in my opinion.
A BBQ propane tank will be just fine you will be amazed at how long the propane will last you on a cricket than your hot head
a cricket should also be fine on one 5lpm oxy concentrator or perhaps 1 -7-8 lpm one but either way you should be just fine
A C clamp is needed as well to make sure your torch is secured to your work top.

Be careful with Harbor Freight hoses.... Most are "R" rated and for Acetylene ONLY...... You want "T" rated hose for use with propane....

Almost all small fuel/oxygen torches setup the same.... Green hose on oxygen connector, red hose on fuel connector...
Other end of hoses, red on regulator for fuel, green on oxygen regulator or oxygen concentrator...
IF you are going to work soft glass, its customary to run oxygen pressure 2X fuel pressure.... If you are on natural gas and concentrator, run what you got........
Not a lot to it.....

As IF-Designs suggests, you can clamp your torch down with a C-clamp. I personally found it got in the way a bit for me, so I have mine screwed down to my counter top.
You can get T-grade hoses and fittings either through your local welding supply co (although they will most likely have to order the T-grade hoses for you) or from some of the lampworking suppliers who sell equipment as well as glass (Arrow Springs, Frantz Glass, Wale, ABR, and others).
I would like to politely disagree with IF-Designs on the need for flash-back arrestors, although the list she provided is great, and in principal surface mix torches aren't usually prone to flash backs. This comes from my own personal experience having had a flash-back with a surface-mix torch (minor burner). I was VERY glad I had them in place. I managed, as a rank noob, to find the right combination of things to make myself the exception to that rule. It's been a long time since it happened, but I think I let my propane tank go completely dry while I was working (hadn't checked it in a while.....) and POP! Fortunately, it wasn't BOOM because I had arrestors. Other folks have posted flash-back incidents where the 02 side had the 'event'. I don't remember if I had my flash back on the propane or the oxy side, but there may be circumstances where, because of how the torch is made internally, lack of line pressure on the fuel side can draw the flame up the 02 side. (I'm sure Dale can chime in more knowledgeably than me on this.) You'll likely want arrestors for both, and they tend to be sold in sets.
Good Luck!
Linda

Yup, I AM putting on f/a's on both prop. and oxycon...Better safe than sorry... I have read the horror stories here... Granted, it doesn't happen often.... but the fact that it HAPPENS is enough for me!!
Will go thru threads to view proper set up , etc...
I am so psyched to continue my journey !!!!'
Thanks again and Regards

Ran a cricket on propane at 5 psi and one 5 LPM concentrator between 3.5 and 4 for boro. Now using a Scorpion with NG at .4 psi and a pair of concentrators set at 3.75 at 9.5 psi.
The bottom line is the need to be able to achieve all three flame types. And also check the manual that came with the Cricket for their recommended pressure settings.

I would set the oxycon at 4-1/2 and never touch it again. You should make your adjustments at the torch - MUCH easier than fiddling with the oxycon.

Pretty much what others have said....
Propane can be any where for about 0.5psi to 4psi and it will work fine, final control of fuel is knob on torch anyway.....

Thank you all. The propane will be outside through a wall so I need to set it at a beginning number. Should my beginning propane setting be 3 or 4 for the 5 lpm OxyCon?

Since you control it at the torch, it really doesn't matter that much. I would set it above 5 just to keep the regulator from fluctuating.
