Default Help with ventilation

I'm trying to figure out how to set up my new studio are. I want to be able to set up two torches and was wondering if this setup would work. I have a 12" vortex fan. I was thinking of hooking it up to a metal box that has two outlets with two ventilation hoods. Would it work??

The box is usually referred to as a vacuum plenum and this can work. You'll need to consider a couple of things. For anything approaching balanced draw on both hoods you'll need to be sure that the hood setups are identical. Used 8 inch rigid duct as a minimum going to your hoods, 10-12 inch on your exhaust stack. Calculate your fan power requirements based on getting a minimum draw of 125cfm/sq. ft. on both hoods. Don't forget to include the the bends in your ducts (including the ducts from the hoods as well as any bends in the exhaust stack and the stack cover if it's held open by air pressure) into your static pressure calculations - they will increase the power requirement on your fan. You may need a bigger blower to drive this system. Don't forget to provide for adequate make up air.

Roberts, Thanks for responding. Can you tell me how I would figure out what my fan power requiremnts are? The distance from the fan setup to the air outlet opening is 15 ft and there will be two bends, one at the fan and the outlet opening.

Dale Meisenheimer posted a spreadsheet for calculating everything that you need to get your system set up correctly. You'll need to go to the Studio and Ventilation section on the Art Glass Answers forum (registration required) and you can download it. It seems kind of complicated at first but it works out quite well for designing a safe and effective system.
