Batch Annealing Question?
When batch annealing beads, what material do you set the beads on (mandrels removed), inside the kiln?
Thanks!
Tom
P.S. I'm still searching for a place/person in the Milwaukee area that can do some batch annealing for me.

Can the beads touch each other, or be stacked on top of each other?

yes, assuming your temperature is set right so they don't start getting sticky & melting.

Great, thanks for the info! Now if I do find a kiln to use, I'll know how to put them in the kiln.

One last question: How many beads can you safely anneal at once?

As many as fit.

Fiber blanket or shelf liner will work. I have a friend who anneals her beads in a ceramic kiln; she figured out what cone is 960 degrees. It's a precaution to protect the floor of the kiln against an over-fire.

Hi Tom, you can use any ceramic bowl, put them directly on the shelf in the kiln (leave room around the edges in case something goes wrong and the glass melts), or what I do often is thread them onto a long mandrel of smaller diameter and set them in that way. It's a really great way to prevent them from sticking together.
If the annealing temp is just a hint too high/time too long (I notice small beads tend to stick together when I anneal at the same temp/time as bigger beads, they will actually "snap" apart, you might have to gently rub the spot where they touched, but more often than not, not even noticeable.
I'm curious what glass shops are in Milwaukee, that's where I'm from, and have never had luck finding any when I go home to visit!
Off topic.. Beginning Dreams Forever is a cool gallery, and the little Mexican restaurant 1/2 a block away is absolutely delicious!
