You don't need Photoshop to take pictures. You'll only need it if you plan on editing them after you take them.
For what the majority of people do, Photoshop Elements is all you need.

I own Photoshop but I recommend Gimp, it is free and does most of your basic and not so basic photo editing.

I second the GIMP. Slightly clunky interface, but it does most of what Photoshop does.

Photoshop Elements is much cheaper and does everything you will need for most everything most people do with their photos. Gimp is free and it's a really good program, it's very much like Photoshop.

I do pretty much most of my basic edit and color adjustments with Irfanview..
It's quick to use, really simple and free.....
http://www.irfanview.com
And if you download and in install all the "plugins/addon's" you can edit almost any image format including most "RAW" ones...

There is a really cheap shareware program called Vueprint. You can Google it. I loved it when I had a PC. Won't work on Mac though.

What if the main reason I wish to have an editing program, is to please my name/company on the photo? I was told it's a "layering" effect!

I love, love, love GIMP. Not only great for all of your photo editing needs, but free!
Sandy, do you mean you want to put your company name as a watermark (bottom corner) on your image? Gimp can do that, easy.

Picasa is best for doing batch editing of photos, in my experience. It's free, too.

I don't know about the other programs, but Elements lets you work with layers.

Photoshop Elements, all the way. I'm still using my very old version, #2.
You can find older versions like 5 and up on ebay, for a lot less than what you will pay for the new one.

You can also try Pixlr.com which is free and easy to use.

I tried Pixlr but I ran into more problems trying to get my photos right. It's good for a basic crop and size reduction but not so good when correcting brightness, contrast, and sharpening. I also couldn't get my pictures the exact size I wanted either. That was weird. Then the cropping tool drove me batty because I couldn't make small adjustments before the crop.
I have sat back and compared my PSE pictures to the ones I edited with Pixlr, and it's like...ugh...
Sometimes free isn't always so great. But if it works for you, then that's good.
