new rod warmer
can also be used to preheat mandrels. i made it using 2 aluminum heat sinks, a can, some insulation, and a single burner cooking element. the rods get to about 950F.

Everything Mark does is MacGyver-ish. Always brilliant. I am using several of his ideas and would be lost with them.
Thank-you Mark for another terrific idea. Always nice to hear from you!

Oh! I had seen those and knew folks used them as rod warmers, but I was at a loss to understand why you would want something that hot near your head! LOL Not a beauty shop queen here, though I did dye my hair recently for the first time in my life, and I totally love it. Thanks for the info, Anne, you rock!

Mark, that looks really cool! But don't the ends of the rods get hot?

you can hold the glass rods a few inches from where it has been heated. glass is a poor heat conductor. for preheated steel mandrels you must hold back a little further but steel is also a poor heat conductor.

I have a square of graphite laying on a burner like that.
I like your nifty rack idea though.
