We have several members on here who do glass chain and chainmaille. There was a thread on it not too long ago. I for the life of me can't remember who it was. I've thought about trying it (since I do regular chainmaille and I work boro).

I'm lucky enough if I can get a round loop on my pendants, let alone get a round maille link.

There is a lady that works in the Pratt Art Studio here in Seattle that makes chainmaile like this.

I cannot imagine having the time and/or patience to make something like this.

My first reaction was "What? What is so hard to comprehend? What's so hard about chainmaile.... HOLY SHIT THAT'S GLASS!"

Wow. That took a lot of time and patience.

So what is the HOW? Make a bunch of rings, break them & then attach again to close? It looks like you can see weld spots in each ring, but you surely can't hold them in your fingers to attach new rings if they're needing to be welded back together...

Did you see the coral colored one?

Nope, just like chain link, you make them one at a time.

Make them open at an offset like you would a wire jump ring, then heat the bottom so you can twist it and close. You'd use tweezers to hold them.

OK, that makes sense. Pfffffft. If I were to do that, someone would have to pay me hundreds of thousands of dollars!

That is a nifty piece. I've made rings, and do so by creating one, making another one joined to it, and so on and so forth. It really is meditative, and I give this girl a ton of credit for having the patience to do what she does.

I was gonna mention the beautiful boro rings that you make! You never did get around to showing me though.

Both are beautiful, posters first post of glass-maille and Val's rings.

I actually researched this, it's a standard 1 in 4 (or 4 in 1) pattern. I decided not to tackle it but if I did...I'd make a bunch of links, using a mandrel of some sort (a carriage bolt maybe?) then I'd join them. Way too slow doing the make-join-make thing. This type of project would be all about efficiency for me

It's boro and they're thin. Not much need. But if you really wanted to, you could put them on a hotplate like this guy making glass chain:

Christy, this is Kim Edwards' work. She's a member of the SGB-MA, you should come out to a meeting and meet her! She's very sweet, and her work is stunning. I've felt the glass maille she does and it is light as a feather, so neat!

Thanks all, for the kind words
