CIM Freman for light and Smurfy for dark. Both seem to hold up better.

Very true.

But I haven't found them to have the same reactive qualities as Effetre and Vetrofond.

If it's the dirty grey reduction you're getting, you can try soaking them in toilet bowl cleaner to clean them up. Or I think a very fast dip in etching fluid will do the same without actually etching them.

do you mean encased when it's been reduced or when it's still blue ?

Try to work higher in the flame and turn down your propane so you get a oxygen rich flame. If you still have it, take a Q-tip and dip it into your etch and spot remove the offending area. Do it fast and rinse it quick so you don't see the etch.

Try not to reduce it ,just work in a neutral flame
and then encase in clear. It stays blue under the encasement.

2 parts Snobol toilet bowl cleaner = 1 part water, which you can store in a glass jar. I use an instant coffee jar with a plastic lid. I think Snobol works the best, but feel free to try what you have on hand.

String your beads up on fishing line and dip in this solution with the other end of the line hanging out of the jar. Bob up and down every few minutes or so, and leave it for about 15 minutes. Take out and rinse under cool running water, and use a little dish soap to clean beads well. Gunk is gone.
