best clear for encasing?
Wat is everyone using for encasing these days?
A while back everyone said get Lausha clear, but it seems to crack alot. Even a few days later.( Over Moretti anyway)
Any sugestions? I usually get all my glass from Frantz.
Thanks

Great question Cyndi. I wish I knew the answer.
I received a gift with order of some new Moretti Super Clear from Frantz which was unbelievably good - no scum, no bubbles, no cracking!!
However, when I bought what was supposed to be the same clear from a local supplier it turned out to be very scummy - a different batch perhaps.
I usually use Lauscha and love it. I have not had cracking problems except over Double Helix frit and I think that was a thermal crack.
Gaffer and Schott clear is wonderful so I don't understand why Moretti have such a problem producing a good clear.

No suggestions since I haven't figured it out yet either. I have read a lot of information that Lauscha likes to be warmer (slightly hotter kiln schedule). So, make sure you aren't letting it cool too much before you put it in the kiln and I have read that 980 is better than 960 for garaging it before you start your ramp down schedule.
Hope this helps!

Currently... torch is cold. Not sure when I'll be making glass again. Hothead and Lynx user.

I've used all of the clear glasses to encase and they have all worked. Just be sure the rods are really clean and pull off or peel off any scummy ends first with your tweezers. Lauscha clear needs to be annealed higher..

I haven't tried Lauscha clear since I am very happy with Vetrofond. Always clean the glass well and nip off the tip before encasing helps too.

I've been an avid Lauscha supporter for a long time... until recently. I started getting cracking problems a few days after coming out of the kiln. I always put them into the kiln hotter than normal, and anneal higher like always. The pieces I made a year or so ago are still fine, but my recent pieces all developed cracks within a few days. Same batch of Lauscha. Same kiln. I wondered if it may be the kiln, so I used another brand new kiln and had the same problem.
So, I'm going to switch over to Vetrofond...

I've been using Moretti (and some unlabelled Vetro mixed in from a Garage sale buy). They're all super-scratched, but I generally find I'm able to get fairly clear (unscummy) results by wiping them before encasing and working in a slightly-oxidizing flame about 6 inches out from the torch face. I try to keep the flame from hitting it straight-on in any one spot for too long, especially skinny or sharp spots. If I see scum I pick it off with sharp tweezers, but unless it's really visible I don't "peel" my rods. I've just bought some Moretti Crystal Clear so I'm looking forward to seeing the difference... when it arrives! - Heather

Hi Cyndi-
I tried the R4 Diamond Clear and love it. I still use the Vetro crystal clear and Lauscha and like them both, but the Diamond Clear is so nice I keep going back to it. Knock wood, I haven't gotten cracks with it so far....
If you would like to try the Diamond Clear, PM me your addy and I will send you a couple of rods.

I seem to have a lot of trouble with Vetrofond clear because, to me, it's so stiff. Moretti melts a lot easier but it scums a lot easier, too. I can't encase anything at all with Moretti stringer. But using Vetro, I have to go so slow in order to get the glass to move that my base bead starts getting too hot and the designs smear.
I'd love to find a good clear and from readxing this thread, it looks like there are about 15 choices.

I've had the best luck with R4 Diamond Clear for encasing. It's easier to work, scum free, and I've been able to encase the ASK colors - including Violet Nights which says Do Not Encase - with no problems with cracking.
