Default Disk Beads

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me if there is such a tool to make tall skinny disk beads? I have TONS of requests for these and I don't really want to spend the time to have all the MISTAKES when they fall over! Thanks in advance for your WISDOM!!!

Do you have a pair of parallel mashers? That is what I use and it is a huge timesaver.

This group has been wonderful to me so here's my secret on disc beads. Buy a barbeque tongs and reshape if necessary to make it as parallel as possible. Take a grinder and cut a slit down the center about 3/4" deep large enough for your mandrel. MAke your bead and you can press the entire disc in one motion. If you can't picture this I'll post a picture of the gizmo I made (it's my favorite tool and cost me very little $)

Cool!!! That's the trick I've been looking for. Now, I just have to make them! Would ANY mashers work or should I buy them from a lampwork supply place?

Thanx again!

It is a barbeque tongs bought at Home Depot. I assume you could do that with mashers but I was too cheap to buy a pair just for my experiment. The tongs cost me about $6, are flexiable, and thin enough to grind the slit down the center. Actually I'm not sure mashers will work- the pads may be too thick to grind.
Let me know how you do! If I was an enterprising person I'd make them and sell them on E-bay-heck my beads aren't selling very well!

Karen - that is so clever. I make a lot of disk beads, using my favorite lampwork tweezers, but I really like your idea. Gonna try that for sure! Thanks for sharing. /grace

I'll have my stainless guy quote me on a batch of parts next week.

I'm thinking a 3/16" wide slot in a 2" square plate. Or would a round plate be better?

They will have an adjustable "squish" stop.

Thanks Karen!

Karen...what a great idea...but i have a question. what do you do with the ends? wouldn't the glass be extended up and down the mandrel after you squish? do you grind it flatter after removing off the mandrel? thnks, lynn

Sounds like something new to put on my shopping list!
I also need to get some of those big hole mandrels from you Jeff.
As soon as my kiln is up and running again, I'll email you.

In answer to your question: When you squash the bead down it can only be as thick as the footprint you have layed out on the mandrel. If you try to squash it too thin you will get some glass that is raised all around the portion where the bead touches the mandrel. I have actually added glass to this section to make disc beads with a built in spacer.
It's hard to explain...make a pair or better yet buy a pair with a stopper and play! It is one of my favorite tools!

I would make the slot a tad wider. The 3/16th mandrel dipped in release would not fit otherwise!

Tink - I like the name : )

I have a good idea what I am going to do now, so I will be buying materials tomorrow and sending drawings to my waterjet guy. It is going to have a brass body, stainless plates and high temperature rubber handle grips.

Based on a few suggestions I think I will be enlarging the slot to 1/4" wide.

It's looking like they will be $20 to $25 ish.

Thanks everyone!

-Jeff
