Hi Renee,
When I had my hand surgery I was unable to pick up a hammer for months. Jim made several attachments that screw into the top piece of the machine .... kinda like ball bearings.... he made them in several sizes for me. So I place my dapping block on the bottom of the machine with one of the ball bearings attached to the top and place my flat cap on the dapping block and just pull down the lever and it is now domed. Another thing that works for me with Jim's machine is that there is nothing that I have to hold onto and screw.... my hand still has problems doing this sort of thing.....

And of course he has the ring/bracelet mandrel attachment that he designed for Nicker.....

He is working on other attachments as well......

Hope this helps......
Andrea

i bought the Jim Moore tool because it seemed the most flexible of the coring tools - considering the cost, i wanted something that would still be useable once the pandora craze passes.

i put on the fence as so far i'm not having much luck with it. i think it's mostly user error at this point, though. I'm out of practice making small beads and haven't had much chance to practice coring so all my attempts to date have led to broken beads. I see others succeeding so i have hope for my own progress.

I do the hand dapping myself. I wanted to buy a machine, but first
I couldn't afford one, then I couldn't decide which one (tried them
both, like the jim moore one better, but it's a big heavy mofo. I like
the retro one because it's smaller and easier to store).

In the end, I read all the tutorials, and taught myself to do it.
Now, since I can do it by hand, I can't justify buying one.

Here's some silver (and brass) cored bead porn for you beautiful
LE people. All boro.

hello all
I just wanted to add about the tool I use.
http://www.glasperlenkunst.ch/Shop/p...image/a184.jpg
the seller is the developper too. I didn't have big bucks to spend on such a thing so I am very pleased that he sells it for a fairly good price.

My results are as good as he shows in his online manual.
http://www.glasperlenkunst.ch/Beadliner/Beadliner.htm
I like that you can hold the whole tool in your hand and "feel the bead" while coring it. It is also quite a small tool, which I appreciate alot, because it doesn't require much space in the studio.

sylvie, you obtain very neat borders if you thin the silver tube out a bit, with this tool, before coring the bead:
http://www.glasperlenkunst.ch/Shop/p...image/a206.jpg

and I was drooling over every of your beads, now I wanna go and make more!

Fabienne, thanks for the links. While I sadly don't speak German, the pictures are enough to understand how it works, and the results are very nice, indeed. I'm in love with the bracelet at the bottom of the page of the second link!

I voted for the Jim Moore press! I prefer the lever method over the screw-down method. I especially love the plastic die to do the final tightening from Jim . . . this is an example of my bead. It has good puckered ends but with the raised desigh, the holes are not always perfectly even (as you can see in the picture) . . . if I were to get the flaring completely snug with an all-metal tool, I would easily crack the bead. Jim's plastic die works perfectly every time!

I couldn't afford a jim moore (and the shipping to UK) and at the time the other alternatives weren't on my radar so I learned to do it by hand.
I love it, I polish all mine individually through 3 stages of polishing and then cleaning so they really shine. I have a serious cradle to grave thing going on with my work, I cant let any of it go to anyone else to do work on, its all mine, I'm involved every stage of the way and I love it. I'm fine about selling it though.

I dont get that rolled down look that people talk about, but I'm happy with what I do get.
Oh and Ive done rings too. Cant find the pic right now but its on the homepage of my website

Thanks, Lenora. So there's no misunderstanding, though, I didn't use the Impress. I dapped it by hand.

Madeline, those are stunning beads!! I understand why you don't want to part with them.

Lenora how come you can't do that with Jim's I've done up to 1/2 inch holed large bicones on his. If it fits in the press you can core it.

I havent tried to roll back the edges on Jim's so I'm not sure. Sorry I thought she meant the size.

well I can part with them now theyre finished,(except that pandora one at the top, it was my first pandora bead to come out the proper colour so I had to keep it!) Its just along the making process I wont let anyone else in! I make all the silver components to any jewellery I make like rings, and will only occasionally use chain or clasps that are readymade.

oh and I found the picture of the ring I made.

I was reading in some threads a while ago about a ring attachment but there were no pics so I just thought...how would that work? and made one just to give it a go, a ring that is. The hole in the tube goes right on through the ring, so when its worn you can see through to the finger.

The lady whose husband bought it for her loves it!

I checked his price and it is 150 Swiss francs, which is about $137, plus shipping. I thought it was a pretty elegant looking tool too.

Hi Renee,

This is the look I achieve with my retroliner (it happened to be my favorite look for silver lined beads, I've red somewhere that you can get that look from the impress tool as well, but I don't know about Jim's).

To me, the only drawback with the retroliner is that I found it hard on my hands, until Jeri find a way to make it easier on me. I have no strength in my hand: usually, I hand the jars to someone else when I have to open one... or use a jar opener...
When I bought it I think it was the only one available, but I guess I would have picked this one anyway because of shipping costs and storage space, dies are sooo easy to change, and it gets me the look that I want.

As far as the price goes the Swiss one is just over €100 while the impress is just under €65. The difference is because there seem to be different options in size with the Swiss one.
I haven't done any coring yet and am playing with the idea of using the premade rivets and gluing them in to start. I'll have to make a BHB too!
