I was worried that the bubbles would be too large & the bead wouldn't be as strong. Of course, DH's shavings might be larger than what you have, I didn't think of that.

Eileen - Hubs and I are running out right now but when we get back I'll try and take a picture of the shavings so you can try and compare them to yours.

I can do it now, will put them next to a ruler or something.

OK, the stuff on the right is the smallest of the pieces I have (they vary in that batch) and the stuff on the left is DH's trimmings. Next to an inch measure. Oh, out of focus hand holding with just room light, sorry.

I have different size shavings and they work pretty good all giving different looks. Looking forward to seeing your beads!

My larger pieces are straight. I would love to see how the curly pieces look. I have made spirals with brass wire too but kept it solid under glass. I called them my party beads.

Dawn, I would love to send you some. I told DH to stop saving it but I'm going to tell him I changed my mind. If anyone can make it work, you can!

Default Brass Frit Test Beads

Okay...

Here are a couple pics of the brass frit shavings. You can see it's all different sizes and I think the larger curly pieces look pretty good in a bead.

And here are my beads: Please note that the bead with the blue base cracked but neither of these were in the kiln and I had the blue based one out of the flame for a long time ogling over it. LOL!

Tomorrow I hope to play around with the torch and cook them in the kiln. I'll let you know how that goes.

I know! I'm seriously thinking of sorting through the brass with tweezers to get the curly bits out. LOL! Are you getting some from Eileen because if not I can send you a little bit. I don't have a lot but there's definitely enough to play around and make a couple of beads. Let me know.

Here are a couple of beads that went through the kiln. No cracking, and one has been dropped (not on purpose!) and all is well:

Please note they are a bit wonky and the pic is kind of dark, but at least you get an idea of what's going on underneath the clear.

The stuff I have is not "brass" but a manganese bronze, and is magnetic! I asked the friend I got it from, and he said they mix it that way in the foundry for their purposes, and that even though neither is magnetic by itself, the mixture is!

LOL the ones I made a couple of years ago from yours, I kept for a year or so before giving away. And they lasted very well. Only one cracked from memory, but I'm sure it was because I'd used too much and it was way too bubbly.

I don't trust the crockpot with them, but the others have been OK so far. I really haven't done all that many though.

Yeah I remember when this first started up, and that the way they go into the kiln was a big factor, as I recall. I'll have to read from the start again LOL
