Swanstrom Disc Cutter
I just was gifted a Swanstrom disc cutter by my dear daughter, Tammy. It is recommended a Brass - head mallet be used with the Swanstrom disc cutter. Nothing brass is available in any of our Hardwares, Menards, Lowes etc. Hubby did find one that has some kind of heavy rubbery coating over the entire hammer. Do you think it would be ok to use this? I think the only other place they might be available is Rio Grande and I want to try it NOW? LOL
Thanks for your help,
Colleen

You can use any hammer - just be careful not to mar your pegs. You can order them from several places online, and I think I purchased one at Harbor Freight locally.

Gifted for sure! Lucky, lucky you.
No answers to solve hammer problem, though; depending on the user, different weights work better than other weights or types of material.

Google search or try "thefind.com" ... Search for "brass mallet" or "brass hammer".

Get yourself a tube of Burr-life to rub your pegs in before hitting them with that mallet. It will make your pegs work so much smoother.

Yep, definitely get some burr-life. I got a pepe disc cutter and with the burr-life it cuts so clean and easy there's no need for sanding. I purchased mine from www.ottofrei.com
They have the burr-life, a wide selection of hammers, great customer service and fast shipping. Adding the coupon code GIFT should give you 5% off your order.

Ok, I'm curious, why would a brass hammer make any difference? I use just a plain ole hammer and it works just fine.

My understanding is that brass is softer and therefore using one will not work harden the cutters. I doubt anyone would notice but it's one of those "things" that the purists preach Having said that....I did get a brass mallet because I figure if I'm going to shell out $250 for the bloody cutters I might as well take as good care of them as possible.

Rarely, but sometimes hitting a steel tool with another steel tool can cause one or both of them to shatter.
Always use a brass hammer/mallet when striking a steel tool.

This. You don't want to be on the receiving end of a steel shatter.
