Question using old gold jewelry to fume?

I see odd bits of old gold jewelry at auctions going for very little; 10K-14K. Is is possible to fume with or is a better quality of gold required?

To be safe, you want fine gold or 24K gold. Lower karat gold alloys may have unknown other metals in them that can behave in an unpredictable and potentially toxic way when fumed. Lower karat alloys may also be more difficult to get to fume.

A 3" long piece of 26 gauge 24K wire will give you enough gold to fume a few hundred beads and cost you less than $10 at current gold prices. I buy from Rio Grande because their minimum purchase is only 1/10 pennyweight, which is probably about 3 inches in a 26 gauge size. Other suppliers may be good, too ~ I just use Rio because they're local for me and have a low minimum.

Kind of what I figured, thanks.

Heh. I ought to get the wire now, even if I don't play w/it soon, while the price is fairly good.

If you know someone that does calligraphy or uses gold leaf that also works.
You could also ask a jewlery shop that does custom design stuff.
24k scrap works just as well as wire and often is just a little less.
In general metal fumes are best avoided so be careful.

22k is the lowest I'd use for fuming. It works as well as 24k, but actually sticks to the glass better because of the impurities in the glass.

LOL,,, I once tried to use a gold filling that came out of my husbands tooth... needless to say, there isn't much gold in those fillings in your teeth!

You can still save it up if you have other broken jewelry to send in for scrap. We used to have a dentist neighbor and he would come over to borrow my scale so he could send in all the gold fillings he collected from work. lol
