Default Grooved bead to wrap wire around bead

Recently, I have seen round and somewhat flattened round lampwork beads that have grooves around the circumference of them, so that you can wrap stringing wire or other wire in those grooves to give a clean look which doesn't take away from the bead. Do you know if these are done with a type of press or are the grooves made manually? Any tips on how to achieve this look? Thanks.

Do you mean one groove around the rim, parallel to the mandrel, or the ribbed beads where the grooves are perpendicular to the mandrel? The ribbed ones are made using beadrollers (graphite or brass). I've seen the first done by making a groove with a knife (can be done to cabochons too).

Is this the type of groove you are referring to? Is some cases it is ground down with a machine, but in other cases one of these types of mandrels is used.

If you have a grinder, you can buy a bit that will make them for you cold.

Yes, what Sheri said. Aanraku makes them for sale in a 2-pack. You really need a glass grinder to use them and the piece being ground needs a flat side to lay down on the grinder. There is a learning curve to setting the bit to the proper depth. It does make a nice finish. Once done you can wrap your wire around the piece neatly.
