Propane in the house...
You know it's bad. I know it's bad... but a lot of people are apparently completely unaware what a bad idea it is. Is there somewhere that explains WHY it's a bad idea in simple language that I can use to explain it to someone skeptical? Like maybe somewhere official? A website or something? Then I can just refer them to the site!
It's come up a few times with different people and no matter how many times I explain that YOUR HOUSE CAN EXPLODE KILLING EVERYONE INSIDE, it's like I'm kidding or something... Apparently "fuel-air munitions" don't compute for some people.

Dale has had some very good posts on this subject (which I hope he's included, above), specifically discussing the fact that propane is denser than air, and therefore settles to the ground if there is a leak, leaving a pool of highly combustible gas just waiting for something to happen... like cc2's picture.
A house a few streets away from mine vaporized (no kidding, as in absolutely NOTHING left, worse than cc2's pic) and left a 5 foot deep crater because a termite company didn't turn off the natural gas to the house correctly before fumigating. Houses up to half a block away were very badly damaged. Bearing in mind that natural gas is lighter than air, but propane is not, imagine what would have happened if that had been propane rather than natural gas....
You should show this thread to your friends, bunyip, especially cc2's pic and Dale's links, and ask them what part of BOMB they don't understand!!!!

Another piece of ammo for you - where I live now, all homes run off propane (each house has a tank). A couple of years ago, a family much loved in the community was lost because of a propane leak under their house. The gas settled toward the ground, pooled under their house because it couldn't escape, and when they lit their hot water heater after having been gone, the house also exploded and incinerated the family.
There are countless stories like this. Most of us use the 5 gal barbeque propane tanks - which is a LOT of propane if it leaks. I remember reading one post of Dale's where he discussed how fast it can leak out. Pretty frightening! My tanks are outside, and I bet yours are too, Bunyip!
