Hi Marie, missed this one somehow!
The first link you posted is just my Romance frit over a pale pink transparent, and the rest are all variations on using Reichenbach Iris colors over opaque bases, with other opaques dotted on top; the Iris colors cause the opaques to form reaction lines, with is a neat effect I use a lot.

Kalera,
Do you remember all of the luster colors from Bullseye?
I am wondering about the gold/amber colors specifically, but would like to
know all of the names and the progression of the luster colors, if you remember.
Was there an Aurene that changed
names from Brandy or the other way around?
Were they the same color or different?

Joyce - Aurene became Amber Luster. It is clear in the rod. Brandy Luster is out of production as far as I know. I think mine is a pale green tint in the rod.

Kalera - what are the colors here please http://www.beadwife.com/detail.tpl?ItemID=11048 ?
I tried your technique with Iris Violet and didn't get quite what I was hoping for, maybe I used the wrong base color.

I thought they were different, but my memory is a bit hazy on the details...

Someone asked me about this bead in PM:
I wanted to answer publicly in case anyone else was curious.
Quote:
What gave the bead the shiny specs? When did you add this part of your design. What are the color rods you used in the twistie and how did you layer each color? Is adding the twistie one of the last steps to making your bead?
|
With these beads, I start by making a twistie. In this twistie I made a gather of clear and striped it with R-108 and Caliente Silver Blue, then pulled and twisted it out. Then I made a base bead of Uroboros Fern Green, and rolled it lightly in R-108 powder. I shaped it in my lentil press, then applied the twistie in a spiral on each side of the bead, and melted it partway in. Next, I used a cold stringer in white to make twists on the edges, center, and end of the twistie, and applied a white dot in the center of each twist. I applied a transparent purple dot over each twist. I then applied a row of white dots, melted them down slightly, and topped them with transparent dark blue. Last, I applied the collars of R-108 at the ends of the bead.
Thanks!

It's a reaction with the furnace frit... I don't know the technical explanation, but many of the intense frits have that effect on opaque colors.

About your Fern Dragonlarva Lentil Bead
Oh how wonderful! You've noted step by step for me the creation of your Fern Dragonlarva lentil bead. You use so many different glass components (rods, frit, twisties)...it's no wonder your bead creations are so spectacular. I love your results, Kalera.
I'd like you to know that I am so very touched by you...I hope to someday, sooner than later, in some way repay your charitable heart.
Have a healthy and happy day, Special lady!!!
Sincerely,
Neomi

You said "ask me anything" so I am. I asked a question today about how to get the beautiful turquoise/caribbean blue from Terra2. I was hoping to get tons of answers but only got one. I appreciated that but still need more info. You can check out that post in tips and questions if you'd like. It's titled Terra2 - I know here we go again. thanks.

I actually meant "ask me anything about the beads I make"... I wish I was knowledgeable enough to help you on that one, but I've never used Terra2! Good luck getting the answer to your question!

Hi Kalera,
I just got a few bags of frit from this place www.recycledartglass.com because I loved the look of a jade green/silver blue combo you made, and it arrived yesterday. These baggies have big chunks of glass ranging all the way down to powder in the same bag.. Do you have any tips on how to use.. I have never tried to use big chunks?? Not sure how to melt them.. Is this a stupid question..? sigh

What I do when they send me glass like that is first sift it through a colander (wear a dust mask) and then take the larger chunks and put them in a stainless steel dish in my kiln to heat up. Then I remove the dish with tongs and dump the hot chunks in cold water. That fractures them, and then I can strain the water and when they're dry, if need be, I can give them a quick grind in a coffee grinder to break them down a bit more.
Either that, or you can preheat them in your kiln and pull them into stringer.

This is a mix of Reichenbach 108 and Multicolor Dark (forget what number the Multicolor Dark is!) frit, over Uroboros Straw Yellow, gravity swirled and then raked with a cold stringer. Thank you!
