Default Uranium glass tubing maybe? Boro?

I got a few lbs of these 4ft long tubes of what looks like uranium glass today. Different size tubes, like 1/2 to an inch or more with walls about 1/8th to 1/4 inch thick. Also some cobalt blue and some teal and a few other colors. They are unmarked. Do you think they would be boro or soft glass?

Do you know when it was manufactured? Uranium pretty much disappeared from glass in the early 1950's wen it all went into the munitions industry (nuclear and others). Put it under a UV light and see if it fluoresces. I've got some old soft glass that's got U in it, both transparent and opaque. Glows like mad under UV.

These tubes were in a storage facility that had a 1/4 ton of glass (which is now ALL mine, mostly powdered Kugler and Zimmerman). The tube aren't marked in anyway, but some of the stuff was labeled "1974". So it's been sitting there a while. It's dirty and needs cleaning, but it looks like uranium. I need to get a black light, I guess, to know for sure.

Uranium is still used in some countries as a glass colorant. Oh- my dad made his own uranium glass in the 70's. Ornela uranium yellow fluoresces. But the only tubing
I've heard of is the old boro. Wendyki was selling some a couple years ago, very small diameter tubing though.

Lauscha made/makes colored soft glass tubing, and would have been making some back then. I would doubt it's boro, since there wasn't a lot of color available in boro when uranium glass was around (or in 1974 either), and the other german furnace glass stuff would make me think it's all probably soft glass.

Since the rest of the glass is soft glass I think it might be soft, but I looked at some boro tubing on Ebay and it looks just like the photos there. I can see I will be buying a black light. Party on! lol

Here's the listing from Ebay. So there was uranium tubing around at some point.

Yeah, that's exactly how the uranium soft glass I have looks. I thought maybe the boro wouldn't have bubbles in it, but it looks like it does from that pic. The stuff I have is rod, but was found with a mix of rod and tube, german origin, lots of colors in both the rod and tubing - I suspect it's lauscha, since several of the colors and the looks of the end rods are very similar to current lauscha.

I can't try to melt it at the moment, I don't have my torch set up.

That sucks! All kinds of new glass to play with and no torch. I feel for you. It doesn't matter whether it's soft or boro, that color is awesome!

The neon sign industry has used colored soft glass tube for a long time, since the date is 1974, my guess is that it is soft glass.

Neon. I hadn't thought about that. I wonder what they were using it for. It doesn't look like there was anything going on with neon, but all the other glass is soft.

Neon tubing comes in 4 foot lengths - at least the one I have does. Not sure what boro usually comes in .

The tubes I've seen in boro come 4 ft also. I've been looking for some uranium yellow ones, but I havent' found any yet.

My husband hit the end of one of the tubes with a propane torch. It didn't shatter.

Neon is pretty resistant to shock too though.

I bought some of the uranium glass that Wendy was selling, that was boro. Definitely hit it with a uv light and see what happens.

Tough to say otherwise how best to tell though. I know boro tubing doesn't instantly turn to frit when you water bath it like soft glass tends to. You might cork one end (important!!!), heat it with the blow torch and dunk the end to see how it behaves.

Other than that, someone would have to try mixing it with one or the other to see what happens.

If I get a chance, I"ll try to snap a normal vs. uv picture of what I have to give you some idea.

I've seen Vaseline glass under uv light. It's purdy.

Here's in the dark with a uv light. Sorry for the blur, I used a 2 second exposure and was too lazy to track down my tripod.

It is boro, but if you use it to make stuff BE CAREFUL! Uranium is radioactive. Please don't blow yourself up using it if you decide to.

Best of luck,

You get more radiation using your cell phone than you could ever get from uranium glass.

It can't blow up.

You get more radiation eating a banana than you would from this glass. Also, there isn't enough uranium in a ton of this glass to make anything that would support any sort of chain reaction, so no boom.

And, yes, I actually am a nuclear engineer.

You can, however, get some pretty nasty fumes from this type of glass when you get it really hot. Uranium and it's compounds are nephrotoxic in low doses. Be sure that your ventilation is up to snuff.

I really have no use for it. I have no idea what I would do with it. It's thin wall tubing BTW. We looked at it last night.
