I hope this doesn't seem as though I'm hyjacking this thread. Just another mandrel question. Is there a difference in the steel needed to make mandrels? I just bought a 1/8 welding rod @ my local hardware store, my sweetie used his grinding wheel to cut it into three 9" rods. When I was making my bead, it started smelling funky........ this is the reason for my question. Is there a difference in the type of steel you should use for mandrels? Can you use brass rods for mandrels? thanks bunches Sandy :0)

5/64" doesn't exist as a TIG rod, but there is 5/64" stainless steel rod available, your best bet is a stainless steel supplier, or metal supplier, I just picked up some 1/4" and 3/16" rods at a Metal supplier but it comes in 12 foot lengths. TIG rod to them comes in nice little 10lbs packages of 36" rods.

I wouldn't use brass. It is a heat sink and would take forever to get hot enough. I think anyway.

Thanks, I have looked on line for metal suppliers, with little luck. I never thought to check locally

I called this same shop 2 yrs. ago and asked for stainless rods that I could use as mandrels. They acted as though I was speaking Inuit or something. Now that I found this thread and had the names of what I wanted (TIG), they seemed very receptive to the mandrel/lampwork talk.
I added up the cost and figured out that I'd gotten 9 dozen 1/16" mandrels (108pc) for $10, as opposed to the $45 I would have spent if I'd just bought them pre-made! All I had to do was snip them and dremel grind them. I have the dremel drill press, so I just attached a grinder wheel and had both hands free to steady the mandrels, which I ground 8 at a time...4 in each hand. Went pretty quick that way.

I just bought the 316 at a local welding shop and got 45 12" 3/32" mandrels (1 lb) for $12.10. Well worth cutting them myself.

Whats the difference in the numbers? Are the lower 300 stronger that the higher 300 numbers??? When I go in I want to sound confident and cool.

I could not find a welding shop in my town... It's crazy too since I have a friend who works as a welder. I've asked him for help and he always forgets...
