Default Silver fuming with .995?

Hey everyone, so here's the deal:

I got some silver scraps from my dad who does jewelry work so I could do some fuming. I tried them out, and seem to be getting good results. I find out afterwords that the silver is .995%, which I was under the impression is no good for fuming. Any idea why it seems to work fine for me?

.995 silver is 99.5% pure, so it's not an alloy. this is the kind of silver you need for fuming. you want to skip using Sterling. This is an alloy with copper, germanium, etc. and doe not fume well. The reason it's working is you're doing it right.

Lol I guess that explains it don't know where I got that it wouldn't work, just read somewhere that you had to use .999 and nothing else would work but I guess you can't believe everything you read... Thanks for the reassurance everyone!

When they said ".999" they probably meant "fine silver" as opposed to sterling silver. .995 is fine silver, too.

Just stay away from sterling, and you're golden.

Deep copper fuming- coolest ruby you will ever see. But it takes like a half hour.
