encasing question
An encasing question came to me last night after I had finished making beads.
Can encasing with clear or transparent work by making shards of that color beforehand? It may be a lot of extra work for some but I was just curious.
I'm not necessarily encasing challenged, except when I'm working with silver leaf or foil underneath. I'm thinking by laying a clear shard on top of the foil should take care of things.

Are you having trouble with the foil melting? If so, a thin shard would only make it worse. It's been my experience the foil will dissapear if it gets too hot.

Thanks Sheila! That I obviously didn't think of that!

Yah, I just finished "testing" my idea......poof! Gee the silver disappeared.
Darn, I thought it was a pretty good idea too.

if you really have trouble with overmelting silver foil try palladium leaf... it's more expensive but easy to use and it's very difficult to melt away.
otherwise, try letting the base of your bead cool a bit more before adding or encasing the foil and when reheating work further up in the flame (cooler part) to SLOWLY melt in the encasing and don't reheat to the core back to glowing orange or all the silver will melt into balls. Turning your propane down during the melting in phase might help as well - encasing silver (and gold) takes time and patience (hence why lotsa folks use palladium, lol)

Duane, I bought some clear shards to quickly encase silver glass before melting wraps from a rod. Wasn't successful for me, but I was very excited at the prospect.
But I AM encasing challenged
