Default Gold leaf...test for purity?

My dad gave me a few books of gold leaf...only it's quite old and with no labeling on it. It is tarnished somewhat with shades of pink and greenish hue in places. Is there any way to tell if it is pure gold leaf? He thought it was, but I didn't think gold would tarnish like that.

I have a pair of earrings that went rose colored - they are 14k. Sounds like it's gold, but may be less than 22 k. I've never heard that anything above 22 k with tarnish.

Think about it, they normally use gold leaf to highlight trophy boards, gild interior architecture and decorate picture frames etc, it stays gold and shiny for decades

If its tarnishing in any way it's probably not pure gold

What have you got to lose by trying it on a bead or two? It may surprise you. We put silver, copper and brass in our glass, so give it a go. Good luck.

Yep, it's only glass after all, you never know you might get an interesting effect

so did you try it?
any gold less than 24 karat is usually mixed with copper, which would give it a pinkish color and tarnish a bit green.

I have a book of Gold Leaf which I bought with my silver leaf and foil. I haven't used it and it has tarnished (part that were exposed to air - not the inside the folder leaf.)

A good jeweler or pawnshop might have an electrical gold tester. Usual gold scraper will also have them.
