Oh Boy, again, the lost in translation thing with the written word. I'm sorry Kristina, I've heard you poking fun at yourself on the thread about not buying more tools and saving for a kiln. I was teasing you, if I offended you I'm sorry....I'm glad you have a system that is working for you because it's a shame to put alot of time into projects, only to lose them.

Sonja, thank you so much for posting, it's nice to see other colors that I haven't worked with yet.

1. Is Devardi worth its price?

I was really excited about Devardi glass when it was first introduced because of the price. I make huge plain beads for fan pulls and am always looking for cheap glass. However, Devardi is really stiff and the bead has to be worked in the flame for a LONG time to get it shaped. That said, I think Devardi is terrific for small and spacer beads since it's not going to run away from you in the flame.

2. What colors cause problems?

Ivory, lapis, and the peaches devitrify on me.

3. Is it compatible with 104?

I've only pulled and used Devardi stringer on an Effetre base (and vice versa). No problems so far.

4. How is the clear?

No experience since I lack the encasing gene.

5. Do you like, love and want some more of it?

I continue to buy colors that I've grown attached to!

6. Is it temperature sensitive? (Does it burn easily?)

I mentioned some colors that devitrified for me. All in all, though, Devardi holds its color and does not wash out. No silvering or scumming.

Treat a big Devardi rod like a horse: Warm it up, work it, and cool down slowly. I have a Sally Beauty Supply Gold'n'Hot oven which I use to preheat, and I tuck rods under the kiln door. When I'm done with a rod, I put it back in the Gold'n'Hot so that it can cool slowly to prevent cracks. Then I'll set it on the top of my kiln.

Hi Holly..to answer the "what is that color?question..I did spacers of all the opaque lilacs,lavenders and violets i had ordered.Its not any of them.i know that it came in the big box of factory lots and big box of long/shorts and I found another rod of the same color.I suspect it is OP light lilac or OP light lavender as I have not purchased either of those.Pretty sure its one or the other but thats the best I can tell ya

I will be ordering both next time.I adore all the colors in the purple range,trans,SOP and OP..all the lights,meds and darks.

Hi Diana, thanks for your help on this, I looked on the devardi website last night and I think the blue violet might be close to the periwinkle color I'm looking for.

Hi one and all;;

I was away for a few days, and yesterday was just a tail spin around here...

One of the local stores that sell my spiders has put in an order for 110 crystal spiders for Halloween and Christmas... Found this out Sun. morning when I got home...

Boy do I ever have a lot of reading and catching up to do...

This is wonderful, and I did notice a few new faces as I glanced through... Welcome to everyone new... I haven't been here long, but I tell you what, this is such a fun and friendly place to be....

Here is a bead that I made into a spider this morning...
Colors used for bumm bead::
OP Tan base with clear/gold aventurine wrapped in silver foil stringer dots.. then I wrapped the hole bead in silver foil and lightly melted in... I love the reaction in the stringer and the over all reaction of the silver foil and the tan...
Color used for body bead::
Indian Grey Marbled glass with silver foil wrapped and lightly melted in...

Thank you... They were just to see what I could get for color... Milk choc is a good description of the color if it dose not turn coppery, I like that...
18LB box limit is not working this month, just too many new colors I had to have.... Got 1, another is on the way, and another is slotted for the end of the month... So that is about 54 LBs this month... So I'd say that a big NO on the limit working...

I am so lucky that DH helps me to unpack, tag and put away all my glass, and never says a word about how much I have... I think that is because he is a blacksmith and there is a lot of metal coming in at times too...

Houkje...i have my hothead and still cannot get any copper out of the black..no matter how many time I look at the video

Don't know what I'm doing wrong but its something.
Holly,glad you found what you want there.i compared 3 other brands of periwinkle and actually it is close to Devardi's sky blue.no violet in any of them.I'm still gonna get those other 2 I mantioned.I think i have that violet blue in the mix of spacers I made this am...pretty purply.I love purple..have i mentioned that??lol
I am going to take a pic of what i have always thought was a HH and put it on the thread.Mine looks slightly different than all the ones I have seen on other sites.Maybe I DON't really have a HH and thats why I am not getting coppery black to work.I have some Doc appts tomorrow so will try on Wed to do that.

Diana... Beautiful beads... If you use a stainless/silver serving tray to put the beads on and then take the picture you get the muted or black background.. Just looks like a mirror and I like the effect better...

Kristina... Always love your beads, and look forward to seeing more.. That Misty hollow is to die for... It is on the wish list too..

I just ordered one rod of it when I placed my last order. I see that colors that are out of stock are not on the site now, so it must be on reorder.

When I annealed it, it lost it's transluscence, and turned more of a semi opaque opal white. Sorry the picture is fuzzy, but you can see what I mean by comparing I hope.

It's very pretty, but it didn't stay an opalescent transparent and I'm not sure why. I will ask Devardi at some point. I may have annealed it to high. I went to 960.

Hi Laurie... Welcome to this thread... I am very new to lampworking and I'm not real up on a lot of the technical terms of things, but I have a lot of fun at the torch, and this is my 2 cents on your questions..

This month alone I have bought 54LB of Devardi glass... I guess that would answer question about do I think Devardi glass is worth the money and would I buy or want more...

To answer, "is this glass problematic".... Yes it can be... But 2-3 months ago when I first started lampworking, ALL glass was problematic to me... You have to read about, ask questions, gain as much knowledge as you can about the brand/kind of glass you want to work with... And then just dive in and have fun... I can not use clear, I don't care what brand it is, I get scum/black streaks in it no matter what I do... But I have not given up on it... Try, Try and Try some more... For me it is the 3Ts, others say it is the 3P... (Practice, Practice, Practice)... A color that is a breeze for one artist, can be a pain in the side for another... For the most part I think that Devardi glass is great... You just have to learn to work it in a cooler flame, use tools to shape it... Watch the videos that Devardi has on YouTube... Start with a pound or two of shorts for $5.00/LB.. Explain to Natasha that you are just wanting to give this glass a try, and I'm sure that you will get a great selection of colors to try out... If by chance you don't like the glass, you are not out a lot of money... Experience this glass for yourself, and then let us all know the great time you had... Keep in mind the colors are beautiful and bright and hold their color... The rods on the other hand are a bit out of shape, some are skinny and some a fat.. Some are straight and some are a bit bent and wonky... But we here on this thread all think this is the best glass since sliced bread... So humor us,give it a go, and let us know what you think... Have fun...

If you go to http://www.devardiglass.com/glassApril.htm it is the 3rd color in the first line of glass.... I want some too...

Sorry you can't get the coppery color to come out.. It's just being shy... would like to see a pic of your torch... If it is what I call a plumbers torch, then you will have problems... That was mentioned in the video... I do have one and will give it a try today..

Kristina... To bad it didn't stay translucent, that looked beautiful... Semi opaque opal white is nice too... That gives us another shade of white to play with..

Oh boy

Just went looking online and saw some Bernzomatic torch heads(plumbing,I guess now) and I remember being at the place where I was getting my propane and oxygen tanks filled for my Mini CC and I saw this torch head and said"Wow this HH torch is like 5 dollars cheaper than the ones I've seen on the lampwork supply sites.
What a dolt! This belongs on the newbie"what a foolish thing I did" site.
It has to be a plumbers torch.No wonder it doesn't work!
On Wed will be be ordering a HH form Natasha.
Wow..how did I miss that Misty?? I loked about 3 times.I noticed Natsha is running out of several colors so if I want to get some of the other colors I still want,I'd better do it soon.

Diana... I started out on a plumbers torch... The Mag from Natasha is a real step up... I have a Nortel minor, but no place to put the oxygen tank yet.. So the Mag it is... Natasha has the HH on in the sale room now... Link is in the May news letter...

Oh wow Holly. That marbled butterscotch is to die for. I love love love the reaction you got with the silver frit. Focals are outstanding, thanks for posting. I e-mailed Natasha and she said she'd send me a few of the old wonky butterscotch rods she had so I could try them out, and no charge! What a dream she is. I'm so impressed with their customer service. Just found out my order shipped today. Whoo hoo! I haven't been this excited in a long time. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Thanks Kat !! Give the frit and marbled glass a try, you'll be surprised how little frit you have to use to get the reaction going. I think I only used about 10 little pieces of frit....Ya, I know...I'm "cheap" ...ha. I dont' know what kind of torch you're on but if you're on a HH be prepared to wait...and wait...and wait...for the reaction. The longer you COOK it the better....when you see the reaction, it will be spots...just keep cooking it and you'll see the spots get bigger and bigger, that's what you want to be looking for.

I knew Natasha would be able to help you out....she's the best !! I think you'll be really happy with the butterscotch from the regular line, I get some very interesting carmel colored swirls with that. Not as pronounced as the marble glass, but it is pretty. If you like working with silver ivory stringer, I think you'll have a blast with the all the glass because I get good reactions with most of it.

I'm so excited for you that your glass is on the way...let us know how you're doing and remember to post pictures....yeah...we love pictures !!

Diana... I did try the coppery black on the Bernzomatic torch.. Here are the results.. I made the bead on the Mag and then brought the copper out with the Bernzomatic torch.. The trick is that you need to let the bead get cool before you start to bring out the copper, just flash the bead in and out of the flame real close to the torch head and let it cool a second or two in between flashes do not let the bead get any glow to it.. Do not try to warm the bead in the flame before you put it in the kiln or warmer or blanket, you will lose any copper you got and will have to start all over again.... The 2 donut beads, the copper color was brought out with the Bernzomatic torch, the small heart was done all on the Mag torch... With both torches I found that you need to flash the bead real close to the head of the torch.. Good luck.. Post pics of what you got...

Houkje..you angel! thanks for spending your time to help me solve mine until i can get the HH! I literally spent an hour just trying to do that a couple nights ago and got nutting..but If you can do it then I will try your way.i don't think I was letting my bead cool enough and i DID get my beads glowing when i thought i was just flashing in the tip of the blue flame.Sounds like even if i was using a HH,I would have been doing it wrong.I really appreciate you doing this!

OH,Houkje! I forgot to give you kudos on your spiders.You passed the terrifying test..they look so real that I wanted to kill them..lol..I am sooo afraid of spiders.How do you keep those legs from breaking?What size are they..roughly?

Was the sample on the site annealed? Or just worked in the flame and shown? I have some Misty from an older shipment and recall that it went pretty opaque on me after annealing too. I was bummed.
