hot head and noise
Just wondering if anyone has measured the loudness of a hot head to see if prolonged exposure would cause hearing damage? I'm using my big ole head phones even with my MP3 off sometimes cause its so noisy, anyone use ear plugs?

Hi stephl,
I've never measured the the noise level of a hot head, but I do know that prolonged exposure to low levels of noise is just as bad ,or worse, as loud noise. So even if the hot head isn't considered "loud" from a hearing aspect, it can still be bad. I wear big ugly hearing protection head phones. I look stupid, but it makes a huge difference. They are a bit hot, but I'm in Georgia so really I'm sweating already.
I'm upgrading to a Mega Minor soon, but I will still keep my hearing protection. There are lots of other noises in a studio besides the torch. Ventillation, fans, husbands. Your hearing is not something that can really be fixed, so for me a little bit of being uncomfortable is better than not hearing.
Hopefully, someone with more tecnical knowledge than me will come in and give us some details.

It does not seem like it is that loud to me, or maybe i'm used to it. I also work in a casino.. so thats why its probably not that loud to me. I usually have some music blaring anyways, either through the ipod or the radio..

I don't find it that loud either (not as loud as my neighbor's dog barking! ) so...dunno...I'm pretty noise sensitive--but we do run tv's fairly loud @ work (volume 55 on one set, & "half" on the overhead sets) so I am around noise all day at work...hothead seems quiet compared to that!

I'm a terrible whiner about things being too loud but oddly enough the hothead doesn't bother me at all. I'm on a sun porch with lots of windows, two fans going and there is traffic on the street all the time so maybe all of that is drowning out some of the torch sound? Or maybe I'm just concentrating so hard to make the 'perfect' bead that I don't hear anything? lol

Last year while I was still working with my Hot Head, I started wearing ear plugs when I started experiencing that weird sound in my ears--probably tinnitus. It was really noticeable in the middle of the night when the house was quiet.
I no longer have this problem. I'm also working on a Minor, which is very quiet.

I can't help with the "official" level of noise. I just cranked up the Metallica...

Hi, I have a HH, and a Mega Minor but the real noise is my High velocity fan..it sounds like a jet engine and then if I am running the HH too I can't stand it!!
I bought a pair of active noise cancelling headphones and a Sansa MP3 player.
Wow! What a difference active noise cancelling headphones make. I can still hear all of the noises I need to..such as my dog barking but all of the irritating low frequency ambient noise is gone...such as fans and torches...
Now I have to be careful what music I play because I find myself dancing while I torch ( I torch standing up) LOL
