Post Need help PLEASE!

Could someone help me with my problem. I like to use frit on my beads and my simple round ones look great but I can't seem to be able to make any pressed ones. Every time I but the bead back in the flame for polishing out the press marks the frit just wants to defitrify. I've tried holding it farther out in the flame and turning up the propane. It's even harder when you have a large focal. I've also been afraid to turn up the propane to much because some colors will change to poo when you do that. Is it just that some frit colors are harder to work with. I have noticed this to some degree. I'm useing frit from Bead Goodies and Spiraldance. I love both kinds.

I have that problem with certain frits especially the pastelly, chalky opaque ones.

I've solved that problem by using those frits in cased beads. You don't get any devit that way.

Maybe someone else knows how to control the devit without casing better than I

I don't use frit too much - but to get rid of devit on EDP, I just super heat the bead till the devit disappears (it only devits when you keep putting EDP in the flame to "keep warm", then pop it in the kiln. Hope that makes sense.

You need to burn off the devit, turning up the propane will only make it worse, you want a clean flame.

Yup, sadly the main culprit is EDP (or lilac rose in some blends). I've learned to avoid those particular blends for surface frit. There's also a really yummy blue (can't remember which blend it's in, but it's from Spiral Dance) that tends to devit something awful, too. That gets encased or stays on the shelf. <sigh>

Hey Ferret-
As RyanTheNumberImp said, you want to turn DOWN the propane. Turning it up only makes the flame hotter and will fry a lot of colors in that same situation. Sometimes I turn up the oxygen for a little bit cooler flame.

Keep playing with the area you work in the flame and with the mix of your flame until you see the results you are looking for.

Yes..I agree..I learned to turn down the propane...but sometimes I still have probs with alot of frits. Then if i use too much oxygen I get pits. I love using frits...and I use them alot. There are several I have that I've only tried the 1 time because they came out so yukky........but all in all, I found that most frits with the transparent colors in them are the ones I seem to have trouble working with. So I've learned with those types that if you use less frit on the bead...it comes out alot nicer. Good luck
