First Boro try
I did a few hearts in boro last night, my first try using boro. Copying police, come get me...they are Smiley style hearts and yes I was trying for something like that gorgeous pinky, yellow, orange that Brent does. Though I am no where close. (Shouldn't have showed Brent's hearts to my sister who is visiting, who is now requesting I make some like that for her).
Wow...boro is stiff! These are made with a Momka experimental, larger one with clear dots and encased, smaller one color over clear base. Any tips or pointers welcomed! I just realized I didn't wear my welder shades, I'm on a minor...are they necessary for smaller boro flamework?
First try at pics with new photocube too. Need to work on set up to get more clear pics, met thinks.
Thanks for looking,
Beth

for what you made welders shades aren't as important as your diddys/aura-glassblowers glasses. Although wearing welders shades in addition to glassblowers glasses will always give you more protection.

Great job! I love the turned up tip on the top one. Hum.... I'm thinking I should have bought some of that experimental pink. Pretty!

Sweet pinks and good shaping. I would say an awesome first try. They are much better than mine was.

Thank you everyone for the nice compliments. The Momka I used is obviously pretty easy to get pretty colors from, or I wouldn't have gotten them. I really don't have a clue when it comes to how you all get the gorgeous boro colors to come out.
<grin> Pipyr, I was telling my sis that by doing these for her I have now entered "the dark side" and had to explain why I would say that.

VERY NICE!
You asked for pointers, so here it goes... the shapes are awesome. You'll get more comfortable and be able to tweak them even more to your liking as you go along... but damn if I see anything at all wrong with those. Amazing first try... really!
The only thing I see that you may have an issue with is the loop. I see an undercut there. This is going to be a weak spot. Make sure you melt in in until it flows into eachother... for boro, this means it's gotta be really hot. You'll actually see it flow when it's a full weld. These are perfectly OK for giving to a sister though... hell, it's family and if it breaks, they'll get over it.
Really neat colors... and as was mentioned before... welcome... to the hard side.

Thank you, Brent.
Is burning through mandrels an issue with boro? I did the loops as beads on 3/32 and those babies were glowing! Lots more practice needed by me and I appreciate the pointers!

Yeah... it's an issue. You really have to keep an eye on that metal stick. Once you burn through a few, you'll learn how bright it can glow and still be safe. You'll notice a rapid change in the color of the glow just before it burns though... if it heads that direction, move it quick.
I'd practice loops not on a stick... I hate bead poop, but there are several other advantages. too.

Beth, I had to re-read the subject line....Did it really say "First Boro Try"...? Those are AWESOME for a first boro try in terms of color, shaping, etc. My first "things" didn't even look like glass! I think my husband swatted at them with a newspaper on the table thinking they were some kind of crunky critter.
Keep it up!

Aw, thank you Kristy. I have made plenty of "crunky critters" out of 104! I am glad I didn't start lampworking with boro and then try 104, there would just be a big blob of melted glass on my worktable! Boro is definitely slower, so actually a good thing for me as far as shaping.
I think I got lucky on the color I chose to try first, it must be an easy one to get pretty color from.

I have to agree with everyone here - you did an incredible job getting such good color out of your first boro attempt! Well done!

Thank you for the compliments. I'm thinking now maybe I don't want to know this though...am I going to have future "swearing under my breath torch sessions" not being able to get color (or only mud) out of boro! Beginner's luck!

Yeah Brent..."Dynamic"....lol "Damnamic , delishmic, "....Besides learning new curse words....I find I am speaking in tongues with boro.
Hey Brent, on that boro implosion we were talking about with DAP...made my own large, chunky DAP frit for more "mass to strike"...better, but still not like the surface gorgeous colors. Work in progress...seeking more "dynamic colors!" lol Thanks for all your generous advise.
If you guys haven't taken Brent's class....'tis the BOMB! Learned so much about popping boro color that I just couldn't get from books, videos, etc.

Fantastic job! I love working with boro, I started learning on it, and when I tried soft, it melted to fast for me to get much control. I might try it again some day, but I love boro.
Absolutely love that pink.......where did you buy it from?
