Stab yourself when cleaning beads?
Am I the only one who keeps stabbing themselves when cleaning the bead release out of the beads?
I didn't use to do it, but now I do it every time I clean beads it seems. I'm not sure why, but would like to figure it out so I don't keep doing it, even though it's not a lot of blood or anything it still makes my finger or thumb sore!

I use Beadreamers from Dave at Art in the Round and they have nice rounded ends so I don't stab myself anymore.

I dropped my running Drexel while cleaning beads. The point hit just right on the vein on the back of my hand. Much later, I cleaned the wall three feet away from where I was standing. Dumb. That is when I learned to file down those ends.

I do it every so often and mostly when I'm tired. The tip of my BeaDreamer is quite sharp, but it's about 8 years old, and has cleaned thousands of beads.

Once again, I learned something and get to spend money on the right tool instead of throwing money away on the wrong one. Thanks!

I got a cordless Dremel for Christmas, but don't recall seeing a piece that would work for this.

The BeadReamers fit in a cordless Dremel. Best investment I've made.

I do. Mostly because I'm too lazy to change out the bit to a larger one. I don't do many BHBeads though. If I were you I would get a big one that fit the hole size better.
Here's a link to one that might work:

I checked the website, and the 3/32 and 1/8th are out of stock.

I got tired of stabbing myself and decided to only use 3/32 mandrels (or larger) because I can keep more of the reamer in the bead hole - less chance of it slipping out of the hole and making a new hole in me.
Got a little cocky last week and made some 1/16 hole beads and also some holes in my hand again.
Will snap the end off the reamer I have and check out the Dremel idea.

Yes, I used to do it all the time - hurts like stink and can get really infected if you're not careful. I would start to daydream while I was cleaning the beads 'cause it is such a boring job. Now I keep my eyes glued to the bead and the cleaning bit and I haven't had an accident in quite a while. Oh oh, now I have probably jinxed myself - lol.

Get extras! Nothing makes a bigger mess than a dull chainsaw.

I have more of a question than being of help. How are you all stabbing your fingers?
I'm not saying I'm miss perfect but it hasn't happened, I hold them between my thumb and index finger. Can't see how else you would so that's why I'm asking. My fingers aren't near anywhere they would get poked?
Lisi really 8 years? Guess I should go look at these!

I guess I just get to vigorous? I hold the bead between index & thumb of left hand, and sometimes when I come up I go up too far, leave the bead & come down into my finger or thumb ~ ouch & hole in skin results!

I'm always amazed at how the drill bit can hit my finger or thumb with no damage. What's that about. I don't usually stab myself though - it's more of a sideswipe.

Lisi - what bead release are you using? It's amazing that you've been able to use your Beadreamer for 8 years!

OMG Ginko, you made my eyes water...that had to hurt, would have scared my hubby to death.
Yep, not only have I stabbed myself but every once in awhile the smaller rounds slip out of my hand and start spinning on the reamer like a propeller, I use a cordless dremel.
I actually loss a round that way, came off the end of the reamer at such a high velocity that it flew somewhere, never did find that darn transparent turquoise spacer...hmmm

I know the propeller bead effect, too!
You made me laugh visualizing the flying bead.

I'm right there with ya... bead cleaning is something I often do when I'm too tired to torch, which means I become Queen of the Stupid Mistake. Have actually earned just as many annoying minor injuries using my Foredom than I have while flameworking.
Just last month in fact, the bit from the drill somehow got caught up into my (rolled up) sleeve, and I ended up snapping the shaft of the Foredom. 36" of coil turned into 2" worth of tangled wire... fortunately an easy fix, and only a minor cut on my hand...
Yeah, "Be prepared to get cut and burned" should be revised to "be prepared to get cut, burned, and attacked by your drill."
(sigh) On the plus side, it makes me want to work off-mandrel more.

I used one of those tapered bits once. Poked myself and tossed it. I use these http://www.lopacki.com/drills/
I have one from Dave. It is truly great, but very expensive. The ones in the link work very well, are very cheap and have no sharp end.
