Arrow Frit Trays ~ Make Your Own Fabulous Free Frit Trays!

I've been using this type of tip-proof DIY frit tray for a long time, but when I was working in my studio this morning I suddenly realized other folks might find it useful also, so I posted this quickie tutorial to my website:

Have fun!

Not free. I'll have to buy a soda.

What a great idea, Jo. Thanks for posting it! The aluminum is malleable enough that you could make a mandrel dent if your needed to for larger beads, too. Cool!

Well, Miss Smartypants. you MIGHT find a discarded soda can somewhere......! Your idea about the mandrel dent is excellent, I'll have to incorporate that into the website tut as well.......

I love it! But is the edge very sharp? Let's just say I am accident prone....

My husband drinks so much soda they run out at the store! lol not really but he does drink alot. I'm going to use our side cutting can opener and see if that will work.

Great idea! Another one of those "shy didn't I think of that" items. lol

Liz- Wear gloves when cutting the cans, and then leave the sides a bit taller and then fold down the edges, or just put duct tape on the edges...

Glad you all like the idea!

They will be a bit light weight so maybe turn them upside down and fill with epoxy, or clay, or body filler, whatever. Just a thought.

I had that thought also, you could fill the bottom with cement or even plaster, and when it was cured you could trim the aluminum right to the edge of the filler. They are lightweight, but because of the way the aluminum is stretched and compressed in the manufacturing, they're almost impossible to crush and don't tip or anything. Still, having them weighted a bit might be a nice addition. Thanks for the suggestion!

Here in Oregon...that will cost you $.05 in not getting your refund..... but still very cheap. But I gave up soda because recycling the cans was a pain in the butt and I'm too 'green'/cheap to just throw them out and loose the $.05.

Well, I've already made a couple and will try them out next time torching. They do seem to be very sturdy, and are quite a bit deeper than what I've been using recently -- can tops cut with the smooth edge opener. No chance of using the rest of the aluminum to make tools out of, right? Wouldn't want it to melt on me! Thanks for the idea.

That's funny Liz, I was thinking along those lines myself. I think I'd have to put some masking tape or painters tape along the bottom edge just to keep from having to buy more band aids.
Thanks for sharing your great idea!

I'm so glad you all are enjoying this tip. Since I posted it I've already got ideas for a new improved version, which I'll hopefully find time to post soon!

I put mandrel divots in the one I made. I turned the edge under with my wide nosed flat pliers. :loveL Angelique
