Default Vine Stringer that looks like wood stems

I have to jump on the vine stringer bandwagon! Seems like it is the tutorial of choice lately.

If you want a vine that looks like wood, roll the end of a rod of ivory in silver foil or leaf. Burnish the leaf. Burn it off. Yes, basically you have just made silvered ivory.

Once the silver is burnt off, encase this with clear, not too thickly. Heat evenly and pull into a thin stringer. You now have encased silvered ivory stringer. Doesn't look like much.

But, when you use it in a bead, it makes lovely striated shades of brown and you don't have to worry about the silver reacting with other colors because it is encased in clear. It doesn't look like silvered ivory at all.

Here are some beads made with this vine cane.

Have fun!
~~Mary

Thanks Denise!

I had to go clear back to my 2004 archived picture disk to find those beads. That's how long it has been since I used this vine cane myself...but I lit a fire and it's on my list of things to do tonight!

Take care.

Beautiful beads Mary. I love the base of those beads with the flowers on top, just beautiful.

I hope you don't mind, but I have made vine stringer, but with more things added. Started with the silvered ivory, then added sage (or avacado), cased in transparent brown.

This is from 2006! How did I miss this? Thanks for dredging this back up to the front. I read magazines from the back to the front, maybe I should go to the end of this section and just start there reading.

BTW very pretty beads Mary

Wow, cool! I first thought this was a NEW tutorial, then saw the date of the original posting I wondered how I could have missed it, and realize it was first put on here before I even touched a torch! Love it Mary! It is something I've needed for some time...

The base of those beads is effetre black, rolled lightly in white enamel, rolled in copper leaf which is burnished well then boiled into the surface, then encased. The vines and flowers are then added and it's encased again.

Yes, I know, it's an old thread but new to me and I am so trying this. Except instead of ivory I am thinking about copper green or maybe another green.

What would you recommend to make a brown stinger if you don't have silver?
