I used (tried) the Egyptian White sand as a backing on an off mandrel pendant, and it had spider-web cracks all over the white. I also used it on a couple of other beads, as fish fins, and they all cracked as well. So I don't think it is anything to do with touching the mandrel...

Did you let it cool or put it directly into a kiln?
