Default NOx/chlorine smell Troubleshoot

I've had the same set up for almost 10 years now. Cricket, 2 oxys, vent hood, 2 foot duct with no bends, open window on the side wall behind me 10ish ft away.

Lately, and only sometimes, I get the bad NOx smell. I'm wondering what would cause it and only sometimes? I really didn't know until my elderly mother said that sometimes she can smell me bleaching my hair. :O I don't bleach my hair!
So that made me pay attention, I've smelled it when I went to bed, I torch at night so it must 'pool' (no pun) in my room? Again, only a couple of times.

Is it that sometimes the wind is still and my makeup air is not enough? But then why only recently. I would blame a fan, but I haven't used one in a while since it's cooler out and I've used one for years before.

For now I bought a roll of galvanized aluminum and made a 'barley box', hopefully that helps, still wondering though why my set up isn't always working. What else do I look into? New vent hood?

Could your exhaust fan be going?

I wondered that myself. They're not horribly expensive, I just may buy a new one. Incense seems to be ok, it's honestly been awhile...years lol... since I've done it to even be able to compare.

It could be that your fan is under powered just enough that some strong winds are "over powering" it and forcing fumes back into your studio.

Any chance that your "make up air" is getting mixed with your exhaust?

If I remember right someone said you need at least ten feet from your exhaust end to the nearest possible source of make up air.

Could the smell be coming from something or somewhere else?

Another thought is "back drafting" another burning flame like the pilot and or heating flame in a water heater because your studio fan is pulling air out faster than your make up air is coming in.

Like some one fixed a draft and now you are not getting the same amount of make up air.

Moira, not sure what else, it's only when I torch at night and it's that 'swimming pool' smell that you don't want.

My window is at the back of the room, but on the side, a bit over 10 ft.
I thought about pilot light, water heater is in the next room, but would that only be sometimes is the thing. It was only some nights, which has me wondering what the factors could be.

I'm wondering now if it is that my makeup air was not enough, ie a still humid night for example. If that's the case, i can put a fan in, but then I have to wonder if it's too much as you said in your last post, mixing and putting it back into the room.
hmmm

Here's a thought - I have noticed some of the white rods give off a bleachy smell, not sure why....could it be that what you are smelling is fumes coming off of your whites?

If you have the winds pushing fumes back through your ventilation then it would almost always be chaotic and unpredictable when the smell would show up.

Hugs.

Don't get used to this problem please. It could bite you in the butt big time.
