I agree. This is awesome. I'm now making some large hole beads to do this with. Oh my can't wait for this to happen.

I love the copper also.

Thanks Andrew! I have ordered a chasing hammer and hopefully tomorrow, I'll go to Home Depot to get a bolt and some sandpaper!

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this for all of us Andrew! Your kitty is adorable stealing the broccoli btw! If I ever do decide to line my beads (or make my husband do it for me) I'll be using this tutorial. Thanks again.

I've tried "Da Pretty Silva Bit" over the years but never had much luck.

But with your directions, I was finally able to do it!

I cracked 2 beads on the first attempts. So I went back and read over your directions. Here's what I found -
* Pay close attention to using the small punches first to start your flare!
After you get your flair going, it's smooth sailing with the chasing hammer.
(note to self, get a new chasing hammer with a glass smooth surface!)
Oh, and I'm using copper tubing. I think it's thicker than the silver tubing that's normally used, so I had to add at least 4 mm and anneal it first. The first 2 beads that I attempted I didn't anneal the copper tube and it ended up collapsing. I'm not sure if it was from not annealing or trying to use larger punches at first to try and get the flare started.

I was completely amazed that I could actually 'tap' the bead on the 2nd side without it shattering while I was flaring the tubing down. MAGIC!

Thanks again!
Julie Suchy
Super nice job Julie and i love the copper look as well. The copper would be much thicker as its used for pressure applications.

If you dont get the first dapping punch right the second one is liable to collapse as you have to hit much harder with the larger diameter punch. Welldone makes me very happy to see people having some sucsess.

Regards

Andrew

Andrew You're a Star!
What a fantastic tutuorial. I don't know if I will do this. (Have to get my workspace finally finished - still a work in progress) but I sure know where to come to find out how to.
Thank you for sharing the results of your experience in such a clear way.

Thank you Andrew. Off this morning to find out where I put the pipe cutter and order some of the other goodies. I don't have the pretty flat headed hammer. Rats. Then try on one of the fugglies first.

Andrew, Thank you so much for writing your tutorial. I finally understand the process of working the metal to make it go where it was supposed to go using the chasing hammer. These are my first silver cored beads. They need to be polished but I was happy with my results.

I use a Jim Moore Press, but seem to crack about half of the beads that I core. I used his press to begin the flaring process and then used the chasing hammer and my home made fat finger stand to dome the bead. This was my first attempt:

To polish the bead,
First I used a pink nail file that you can get from Walmart.
Then, I used these: http://www.cooltools.us/3M-Polishing...-p/pol-100.htm.
Then to finish it off, I used this: http://www.cooltools.us/Polishing-Cl...-p/pol-851.htm and then for the inside of the hole, I used silver polish, and a Q-tip inserted in my dremel too. My brother-in-law taught me that one, lol.
Thanks again,
Laura

I'm not so sure I like this actual bead (below), but the coring turned out nicely! Thanks so much for your tips. As I've said before, I use a press, but your additional tips really helped me to step it up a notch! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I think all beads are beutiful in there own way. I think it has character looks like the clear is bursting through the skin .

I totaly agree it can be used so well in conjuntion with the press.

Default Great information -- one more question...

Great information in this thread. Thanks!

One more question, how do you get letters embossed in the part of the silver that shows on the inner core of the bead. I've noticed some people have words like "love," "faith," "peace," etc. stamped on the metal core.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have made up some stamps from old allen keys and just stamp the tube before flaring it. Or if you have a steady hand you can engrave with a dremel or engraver. I had one of the first ones i did engraved ( with love ) to a dear friend but cost me 14 dollars.

Andrew.

Default Stamped letters

If you stamp it before flaring, you would be stamping on the INSIDE of the tube, which seems to be pretty tricky. Maybe I don't quite understand what you are saying.

Oh ha ha my bad. I thought you meant looking through the bead. You can still do the same on the outside of the flare with stamps and engraving.

Oh, Andrew!!! If you do indeed decide to make the "Fat Finger" stands, I'd like to get in line to buy one or two!!! I have a problem with my left (dominant) thumb...I was referred to a specialist, but before I was able to make my appointment, my husband's insurance coverage changed. The person I was referred to does not "take" the insurance we are now on - arrrgghhh!!!!

Sorry for the long, whiny story! Suffice it to say that I know it would take me at least a week or more to "recover" from the pain I'd go through doing the filing and sanding necessary to make my own Fat Finger. I "save my pain", so to speak, for mandrel turning and typing - ha!

I've got the Jim Moore press, but I sure love this "domed" finished look! I have all the tools (except for that darn FAT FINGER) - and I make lots of beads that take a 5mm outside diam. tube, but can't recall exactly how big the interior is! Are you considering making a few sizes?

Aren't we just terrible!!!! Anyway, if you DO decide to make some, I hope I have a chance to purchase!

Thanks for this wonderful, helpful tut!!!

Hi Pat and De

I still have some brass stock left over from making my Fat finger stand il make a couple up and workout a reasonable price. Can you guys give me just your state and il see what shipping is going to be for you. No pressure to buy if your not happy with the price. They will come in handy when i get my workshop finished.

If you guys findout the internal diameter of the tube il make to suite.

Regards
Andrew.
