Default Poll: Best Cab Mandrel for stud earrings?

I've been asked by several people at craft shows if I make stud earrings, so have been considering purchasing cab mandrels. What do you find is the best way to make consistent size cabs for earring studs? I'm leaning toward Devardi's, as I could purchase several at their price. But I do see the benefit of having the nub in the center of the cab to hold the glass more securely.

(Broken beads definitely an option, but I would like to have more control over designing on the cab.)

Thoughts? Insights? Emotional outbursts?

Thanks!
Trish

None of the above; stainless steel construction nail held in a pin vise.

Thank you sooooo much for sharing!
Sounds silly, but that really brightened my day!

Make sure the nail is not galvanized. Putting zinc in a flame is hazardous.

I make stud earrings straight on to stainless wire held in a pin vice. I cut the two pieces of glass rod first so they are equal, then hold the glass in haemostats, heat the end of it and the wire and plunge the wire into the glass. Then I melt the glass until it forms a ball which I can then flatten or press if I want to. I use commercial backs for them, bought from a local supplier

thanks! great idea to cut the glass first!!
I've tried making headpins that way, but had trouble getting consistent sizes.
