What kind of rocks and gemstones can be encased?
I have encased my local volcanic rocks successfully and I know that gilson opals work well, but what others have you tried that worked?

So I was curious about this too and went to the local rock shop. The ones that seemed like they had potential were garnet and I think it was azurite (have to go back and check). Also, black diamonds were sort of cool. Calcite lost all color. I think ruby would be great but it's a bit expensive.

I know what doesn't work. This is a small piece of Andamooka opal given to me by a customer who was told that they could take high temps. I told her it probably wouldn't work but I'd try it anyway. The outgassing was pretty impressive.
ABR sells some stuff that they have in the boro section, moldavite, tekite and cyanite. Never tried any of it.

That is pretty cool. Don't know if it makes a difference but I was trying it with soft glass. I think if it survives soft it'll probably survive hard. But I don't think a lot will survive either.

This is what happened when I tried Obsidian. No good at all.
Second pic shows my volcanic rock - this works well.

I have with successfully encased (framed) spectrolite in fine silver. Spectrolite is a variation of labradorite so I believe this will endure too. I have been told that emeralds will Work, too - those are too costly to play with, so I havenot tried.

I have encased non-auminum (copper I assume) coins. http://instagram.com/p/qK1m2xRclk/ The aluminum just melts away of course. I know it isn't a rock but it's not glass either.

Moldavite works, but it isn't that great to look at. Kyanite works also, but I think it is just plain ugly

Silicon crystal looks great in boro. Keep it cool to avoid bubbling.

I have encased Herkimer crystals. I think they are a form of quartz.
