Default Hanging the hood form the ceiling

It's time to hang my vent hood from the ceiling. I planned on using eye bolts in both the ceiling and the vent. My "hood" is really a wash tub.

What kind of cable / rope do you recommend for the job? The pic below is the hood and there will be about a 4' run from the bend to the fan.

Thanks,
-BEP

Chain with eyelets in the ceiling studs. Your gonna have to work really close to this in order for it to draw sufficiently. What kind of fan are you using?

Thanks, folks.

I have it hanging now as a test, it will end up lower, I'm sure. The bend in the pic is made of 2 adjustable elbows.

The fan will be on a shelf where that test shelf currently is. I have larger, stronger brackets coming in the mail this week to hold the real shelf that the fan will be on. I'll probably leave one bend at 45* on the hood and one coming off the fan to restrict the airflow less. It's going to be loud, but I don't have the option of putting it on the outside of the house.

The fan is a Dayton 1TDT5 965 CFM squirrel cage blower.

I am not so sure how well your hood will draw, but I have the same fan that you are using and it has worked great for eight years.
I do not use this fan with a hood setup but rather as with a funnel type system. With this setup the fan works great .
Best of luck !

We did the math and it appeared the hood would work, but that was maybe 8 months ago and there's always a chance we messed the math up.

If so, I'll switch it to an intake with a smaller "mouth" like a funnel system.

I appreciate all the input, everyone.

Brian, here's how we mounted mine. We purchased a commercial hood from a scratch and dent kind of place, pretty cheap. Went from there. Not pretty, but works well.

That looks great, thanks for the pics.

How bad is the noise?

Honestly I just kinda assumed there wasn't a quiet way to do it, if it is truly removing the fumes adequately. Maybe if I had a way to put the fan away from the studio - but that isn't an option for me.

I can try to do a little video clip of it running, but I'm not sure if you would be able to really tell the volume level of the fan. It is NOT unbearable. I'm just kinda of used to it. I have a cave of sorts, basically a one car garage size room. If someone wants to talk to me, they have to come in that area or I cannot hear them. I have a headset that hangs around my neck with earbuds and a microphone on the neck part, and can have phone conversations using that no problem.

I have a similar setup, 4x5 hood with a much bigger fan. Not quiet enough? Find a way to mount the fan outside. Mine is.

I hung my hood from springs connected to chains to eye bolts in the ceiling joists.

I got them from the screen door hardware section at the hardware store.

The springs are supposed to reduce some of the vibrations from feeding into the ceiling or walls to resonate and or amplify.

At least that was the theory when I put it up.

But mime makes a great deal of noise as well so I just wear my radio gun muffs which also have an input jack for plugging in my cd / tape player.

I also keep a mirror off to one side so I can see the wifeunit behind me so I don't jump out of my skin with molten glass in my hands.
