Here's the ashtray I made the other day. Not the greatest pics in the world (phone camera), but here they are:

I was asked just this weekend at a show if I could make "oil" dishes. I guess the chinese haven't started producing them yet....

It isnt that its an oil dish (actually called and sold as "Concentrate Dish(es)"), its that the people who prefer oil over herb generally have a like towards glass and have a good glass collection, and they collect various pieces and a lot of types of work. Each grade or strain of concentrate you create usually gets its own dish too, so they like to have a variety. Wigwags in them, honeycombs, sparkles, millis, glow, all that stuff goes well in the concentrate market.......
I dont think you'll see much China/India competition yet, the market is a bit specialized, most people I meet dont even know what oil is or they've "just heard" of it once or twice... Everyone needs cheap mass produced spoons for gas stations, even my dad and grand dad use glass spoons. They both, though, wouldnt know what to do with oil..............

Thats a really nice start...... My first few looked just like them except with cracks all over the place. Here's a few tips in no real particular order that might help............
--> Oil dishes like to be real smooth inside... If you cant 'scrape' it with a glass or titanium dabber to get the last bits out, that's bad.......
--> Start your dishes on 25mm tube on up to 50mm tube, or transfer your dish work to that size tube before you finish.. Then use a blowhose and marver/puff it to the shape you want and make all that smooooooooooooooth!
--> Handy to have a lip on the top for a dabber to rest........
--> When you are ready to pull the dish off the big tube, heat just the lip up and pull on each end and puff, then do that again and again till its so thin that it just pops and voila theres your dish lip....
That's about all I got, sorry if its random, blame it on my friend here, Errrrl.

I have a question about these 'oil' dishes. Whatever you put in them is not ment to be heated in the dish correct? It is more of a storage container?

Correct...... Although once they get "towards empty" sometimes I flash it with a lighter to melt it all in one spot, but no continuous heat.

I was wondering about that part also. Thanks for the clarification.
I don't do functional glass at all, so this may be an obvious dumb question to those that do, but do airtraps cause a problem in pieces that are heated?

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your advice. I'll try that next time and see what happens.
