It's a high temperature wire. I had purchased some from Thompson enamel to make a type of 'mandrel' for copper enamel beads that I was doing before I had even heard of lampwork.

This site has nichrome wire in many different gauges (11 - 40g). They sell as short a length as 10 feet.

Thanx Paul! That was great. What gauges of Nichrome wire do you recommend?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Thank you for the kind words about my Etsy shop Tendebrock you made my day. Thanks for the supplier Tina.
It is 21 gauge that I use for headpins.

Awesome; it's on my shopping list for next paycheck!
Thanx Paul

ETA: The site Tendebrock recommends has 20 and 22 gauge. Does it really make a diff, ordering one size over the other when the are that close in size?

Just a thinking; nichrome is an alloy between nickel and chrome, right? Nickel is not good for you to wear directly on the skin. It could give you allergy and eventually make you allergic to coins.
Don't mean to spoil the party, sorry.

Good point Aarthus but nobody wears nichrome wire. The wire is covered by glass and or enamel and the French ear wires or jewelry connectors are made of silver or artwire etc.

Hi Paul
I hope I am not to late in posting in this thread as it has been awhile since anyone posted.
I watched your video on making headpins -thank you very much for sharing!
I made some and they turned out well and I am going to wear them when I put my hair up and I will also send them to my grandchildren. I was wondering what I could put on the sharp ends of the headpins so they don't poke scalps? Should I just make a loop at the bottom?
Thanks for your help Paul
Karen

You need to file them just like when making earrings. Or this thing called a burr cup.

Glad this thread was brought forward I hadn't seen the video. Loved it, very helpful. I love glass head pins but have only used copper. We made them at a bead camp I went to last week. I had no tolerance for the burned fingers using the copper. I'm going to try this wire. Thanks Paul for the info.

Did you manage something Karen?..burr cup would be great! also I was thinking of a longish U pin using maybe 22 gauge or so, with sides tight together..so bent exactly like a bobby pin but the bend is the end of the hair pin and the double top then decorated with glass. That might work..

Every time I turn on my torch now, I make some leaves before I start on beads. I think I have become a leaf addict. It is a zen thing for me. I could spend hours making these little leaves. It is not a true twisty or cane, but I mix a bunch of differnt shades of opaque and transparent greens with a little black, then pull it out. Each leaf is a little different. CIM poison apple makes great leaves. Bright, fun color.
