batch annealing question
I have searched all over this forum for an answer but have yet to find....How do arrange the beads in the kiln when you batch anneal them???...Sorry if this seems like a silly question but I have a lot of beads that need to be annealed and they are off the mandrel but I'm not sure if you just put them in the bottom of the kiln loose or something different. Thanks...Kelle

Just stick them in there. if it's a brick kiln, I would put some fiber blanket down, jic, but you should be fine as long as there's a good coat of kiln wash.

I have a kiln coming from The Glass Hive....so I can just put the fiber blanket down and then the beads...does it matter if they touch or better if they don't?

Mine touch. It only poses an issue if the kiln gets too hot and they start to slump.

some don't mind if they touch, but. as a technical glass person, glass should never touch each other in any heating situation, there heat sinks. best way is to clean them, line them up on a mandrel and suspend them off the floor.
Any other way doesn't make it wrong.

I use the "old" mandrel(s) and line them up method.... Use some kiln furniture to support ends of mandrels....
And NO the ends of mandrels are not touching heating elements... It only appears so...

Where can one find some kiln furniture?
I need some ideas on what I could use to hold the mandrels for the "line up" method.

I just put them on a plate, just to keep them all together.

When I batch annealed I just set them spaced towards the back of the kiln, on their sides so they couldn't roll around. Just make sure they aren't touching and try not to place them too close to the door where they might not get the heat they need. Asides from that it really doesn't matter.

I was thinking about cutting stainless glass rod holder in half and use them to hold the mandrels. Some say that you can't put stainless in the kiln, some say it's okay. I am not sure...

Right now I have close to 100 beads still on the mandrels. They are stacked on top of each other in a 'heap', and will be annealed in the morning. I've done it previously and had no problems. There isn't any kiln wash on the floor of the kiln, nor is there a fiber blanket.

I have used stainless molds in my pottery kiln to fuse glass, stainless wire in my fused pendants to make embedded "bails", etc.
I bought a used chili pepper and it has metal racks in it to prop the front of the mandrel in, and mandrels are stainless too, right?

I have batch annealed directly onto the floor of the kiln. The kiln overheated and I had to scrape puddles of glass off the floor of the kiln. This can damage your kiln. I now use a piece of shelf paper or fiber blanket on the bottom.
