Default Kiln Trouble - Help!

Well, I have a Paragon Caldera with an Orton Sentry Xpress 3.0. The last time I made beads it shut itself off after I finished working. I didn't think anything of it until today when I tried to start my kiln. It took all of my instructions and started heating then turned off. It made some crackling noises and now it won't even turn on. Do I need a new controller? help! I have orders to make! (panic)

Any ideas of what I can try to fix it? Or where to take it?

It's in the control box and is easy to replace, hopefully someone will let you know where you can get one...maybe through Orton.

At what temperature did the elements shut off?

When the elements shut off, did the temperature display stay lit?

Fuse, on the back of the control box.
Check your breaker.

I checked my breaker and it was ok. The fuse doesn't look burned but I think sometimes they don't look bad when they are. Is that right? Where can I get a fuse of this sort?

suggest you call or contact by email Paragon. They do have quite a lot of troubleshooting manuals and wiring diagrams on-line, if you are inclined to try to troubleshoot this yourself.

It can look good and still be bad. radio shack will have one.
Ckeck to see you still have power to that plug, plug a light into it to check.

It could be a bad switch, relay, or controller, or a wire got loose, pull the box off and check for that to, unplug the kiln first.

Well, it may have been the fuse. I changed it and when I went to plug it back in I saw that the ground plug was burned. Does that mean a surge went through it? I have now bought a surge protector and plugged it into that. Do you think I need a ground plug, too? It may have saved the day or caused the problem cos it was melted and one of the prongs had broken. Which do you think? Thanks for all the suggestions! I was in a panic!

There may be a short in your wall plug, pull the cover of and check it.

so now that we got there, there is a reason the plug fried, sometimes they just do, but with a kiln plugged in makes me wonder if your drawing to many amps, is it a dedicated plug for your kiln ?. if not you may be pulling to many amps on that circuit.
